Hey. I've recently been having trouble with the basic and reversed card format on Anki 2. When I create a basic and reversed card type Anki simply doubles my original card. Instead of getting one card with A on the front and B on the back, and then another with B on the front and A on the back, I get two identical cards with A on the front and B on the back. If anyone has a solution to this problem, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I've heard similar issues come up a lot recently. The only recommendation I would have had is to use the desktop client to alter the card templates for the note, but now AnkiDroid 2.4 exposes those templates too. There will be a formal release any moment now, or you can grab a beta from here: https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android/releases . You can find a card in the card browser, click it to edit, and at the bottom you will see a field mention cards -- tapping that will open a dialog to let you edit the templates.

Actually you can't edit the templates in AnkiDroid 2.4, only view them

You're welcome to submit a PR ;)
The problem is that enabling editing without properly implementing preview would almost certainly result in a sh*t blizzard of support requests

why wouldn't the previewer (which I remember reading something about that being moved) not just see the change and render through the updated template?

Because the previewer currently only works with notes which are saved in the db. I.e. it won't reflect edits until they are committed to the db

After some minutes I think I get your point -- I suppose you're saying people would want a way to preview the changes prior to committing them, like a sanity check in advance of making any actual changes. (Not like one couldn't keep editing until it was just right, but I see the point at least.)

I believe the proper cards are generated but the sibling burying behaviour is confusing you. If a card is a new card and you fail it, it goes into the failed pile with two "steps" so you have to pass it twice. The other card (the reverse one) is buried so you don't see it until the day after. You can turn this feature off in the deck options or click the "unbury" button on the study screen to put them back in the study queue for the current day.

When I review the cards, I'm just seeing two of the same card. I made a test deck with the card, front side: Up, back side: Down. Two cards appeared in my deck. When I studied them I saw two cards that read 'Up' (i.e. the front side message). Why didn't one of the cards display 'down'? Thanks

Can you please export that test deck and send it to me?

Okay so there's definitely a problem. The Basic (and reversed card) note type in your collection has identical templates for Card 1 and Card 2, so it is actually generating identical cards. Do you use any other clients besides AnkiDroid? Do you use them in any other language? Did you ever modify this template yourself (on the desktop client)?

On a brand new collection this is created correctly so I'm not sure how yours ended up that way.

I primarily use the desktop version. Is there a way I can reverse the template to the original setting?

Tools -> Manage Note Types...

Select Basic (and reversed card) then click on the Cards... button on the right. Click on the Card 2 tab at the top, then change the line that says {{Back}} into {{Front}} in the Front Template section (the topmost box).

And the {{Front}} into {{Back}} in the Back Template box at the bottom.

I do not believe I have ever modified the program. However, I have noticed that after some of the note types, I see some kind of code. For instance, after basic there is the code 'f061e'. So it reads 'Basic-f061e. In the last few hours there has been a code appearing after basic (and reversed card): e714c

The suffix is added when you try to create a new note type with the same name. Usually this happens when you import a deck that uses a note type with the same name (I don't believe it merges them). It's possible you imported a deck with the bad template originally.

It looks perfect in the preview now but the review is still giving me two reviews of the same card.

I just want to mention Houssam that in the past two months I've heard like 5 similar issues. Never really use to hear these issues, but every time I hear it lately a bell goes "ding" in hear "there's another one".
