Hi, I use Anki and AnkiDroid to learn English words on my PC and cellphone. So, I want the words to be pronounced automatically in AnkiDroid and Anki too. How can I do these. Thanks.

Thanks. I did it but it show this error: "No text-to-speech language available." So, what should I do now?

Thanks but I cannot understand what I should do!! I am a newcomer and need more explanation. Would you please explain easier? My cellphone is LG-E405 with Android version 2.3.6, if it is important. Thanks.

What you are missing is a part of the Android operating system, not of the AnkiDroid app, so this in actually beyond the scope of this project. As i said, you need the Android settings, not the AnkiDroid settings. While i am a fan of another search engine i basically tried LMGTFY. Maybe it is time to escalate to JFGI. But it won’t become much easier than the explanation from my second link above.

Thank you. Is your mentioned solution in past post is applicable for this version of Android (2.3.6)?

Ospalh has given you the information you need. We're not your Mother; please try it yourself.

Based on what I understood from your comments, I went to the Setting>Voice input & output>Text-to-speech setting>Install voice data. So after searching via google play, this comment was showed: "No result found for "pname:com.svox.langpack.installer" ".

I also went to this address (Setting>Voice input & output>Text-to-speech setting>Pico TTS) and saw this comment: "No result found for "pname:com.svox.pico.voice.eng.usa" "

If I did what you meant, what is the problem?

I find it interesting that Xiao was temporarily banned from this list for being outrageously rude to users, and yet the wagon-circling clique that controls the fate of this app says nothing when the person who strangely presumes a leadership role is condescending and rude to users.

You guys really need better 'leadership'.  The disdain for non-dev users in this group is palpable at times.

While my comments do nothing immediately to help Tesoke, I have hope that one day this project will have a healthier decision making dynamic which would in turn lead to a healthier community; these comments may in some tiny, indirect way lead to this.

Tesoke,

I just used Google and found the answer to your problem in approximately 5 seconds:

You can install Pico TTS from here:

@Tesoke:
This forum is only about AnkiDroid itself. The answer from August 16th is all we can do here. If you have more questions, please ask at http://android.stackexchange.com
Thanks for using AnkiDroid!

Thank you so much. I downloaded and installed the following app: https://code.google.com/p/eyes-free/downloads/detail?name=com.svox.langpack.installer_1.0.1.apk

Then in the Ankidroid, I went to Setting>Advanced and activated Text to speech icon. Then run the Ankidroid again, it show the message: "Initializing TTS ..." but it did not read the word :(. What is the problem now? Thanks and sorry for wasting your time. Bless you.

I'm surprised that ospalh's comments are being criticized here.  I wish I were surprised that only I am criticizing Tim's comments. Ospalh simply cannot harm the project the way that Tim does, because of their respective positions.    The attitude Tim demonstrates here towards users needing help is a poor attitude, especially for someone who presumes authority in a project like this one.

From reading discussions from years past, it seemed to me that this project was born and nurtured with positive attitudes of collaboration, respect for users, concern for user wants, and with a healthy community spirit.   It seems inevitable that this will again be true, but it also seems unlikely to happen with the current 'leadership'.

 Then in the Ankidroid, I went to Setting>Advanced and activated Text to speech icon. Then run the Ankidroid again, it show the message: "Initializing TTS ..." but it did not read the word :(. What is the problem now? Thanks and sorry for wasting your time. Bless you.

@Tesoke

I understand it must be frustrating to wait an entire week (Aug 7 to 15th) and not get any help at all.  I'm sorry I do not know the answer, I'm not familiar with this feature.  Having checked the manual, I'm curious:  Have you also done the "Reset languages" step that is described below?

Text to Speech
Enable this option to have Android read out all the text on your flashcards using the default text to speech engine. Google’s built-in TTS engine should work; 3rd party TTS engines may or may not. AnkiDroid will ask you to select the language for the front and back of your cards once for each deck on the first time you review a card in that deck. To change the language or disable TTS for a given deck after making your initial choice, you’ll need to use the "reset languages" option described below and reconfigure for each deck.

Yes I obviously could have handled my frustration over the OPs unwillingness to use a search engine a lot better in this case. My apologies to @Tesoke. I'm busy and stressed with real life atm, in addition to being a bit swamped with the beta release, so help with tech support would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I am the current project leader (I have no idea why you're using accusatory words like "presumed"), and as such I probably have a greater responsibility to be polite than other developers, though I feel that all core team members share this responsibility equally, as is the decision making process (shared technocratically between the core team members).

While you are welcome to continue to criticize specific decisions or actions done by myself and other project members, I personally feel that your constant negative and accusatory tone brings down the generally positive atmosphere here. I would highly appreciate it if you could try to make your comments more constructive, and less aggressive. I would also highly appreciate it if you could refrain from posting "meta" comments about the project in threads such as this (i.e. requests for help on a specific issue), and instead start a new thread where you can link to the thread in question that you have taken grievance with. Also it would be good if you understood that having this kind of negativity around significantly reduces my motivation to contribute code, and the million or so AnkiDroid users that benefit from my contributions probably wouldn't consider that to be a good result.

Please not that this is not an invitation to engage in a dialog with me, as (based on previous attempts at this) I'm sure it would be highly unproductive for both of us, although I guess I have no right to stop you if you do choose to continue your one-man crusade against me.

Thanks for your help, but you did not explain how to "Reset Language" and what I should to do.
I want to add, if it helps, that anki on my PC did not pronunciate  the  words too!! Some friend said: "[sound:{{font"}}.mp3]" to "front tamplate" and it do it automatically. I did it but it did not work too.

Dear friends please help me, because I tried to solve this problem very much and spend much time and it did not work yet!! I really need to this application. Thanks for any help.

Finally I found the problem :) I checked the playback options on the "general" and it works and read the audio. Sorry for bothering you in these days. Thanks.

That's great that you found a solution!  I noticed that you had trouble getting both sides to read.  Eginhard is in a better position to help than I, good luck.

@Tim

Noting your disinterest, I plan to respond in a few days when I have more time.

OK if must respond then I feel I should clarify one point:

> I feel that all core team members share this responsibility equally, as is the decision making process (shared technocratically between the core team members).

I've realized that currently four of the "core" developers have their visibility on github set to private; for example @ospalh, and now @eginhard are both core developers, though you probably can't see them on the above quoted link. Anyone who has ever contributed to AnkiDroid in any way and considers themselves as a "team member" is a team member, but the "core" developers (for want of a better term) are those able to speak authoritatively on behalf of the AnkiDroid project. Being the leader is more just a lot of extra administrative work preparing, making, signing, and distributing releases than any kind of extra authority I exert over the other core developers.
