Well after spending a ton of time on this issue, I finally got my device to
display correctly. Here is what I did.
Downloaded just the plain sans noto font on my phone. This created a
“fonts” folder directory on my phone.
Plugged my phone into my PC so I could access the directories.
Followed theses instruction that I came across this morning:
Alternatively, you can create a new
subfolder "fonts" in the main AnkiDroid directory (i.e. the folder specified
under Settings > AnkiDroid > Collection path), copy a compatible ttf
font file there, and then set this as the default font under Settings >
Fonts > Default font. Note: using this method is much less reliable than
the recommended way, and will likely lead to inconsistencies if you study on
more than one device.
I than unplugged my phone from the PC and opened Anki
Went to settings and now saw the noto font which seems to display
correctly.
And it now works. It took me maybe 15 minutes this morning, after hours of
time yesterday.
Hope this helps.
