Hello,

This is a repost from the Anki (computer version) forum; it was suggested that I post here.

tl;dr audio was working fine for several decks on AnkiDroid, but after the first sync with AnkiWeb audio is broken on AnkiDroid and on desktop Anki, but works in AnkiWeb.

------

I am having trouble with audio files associated with a couple of shared decks I recently downloaded (Korean Vocabulary by Evita, Korean Grammar Sentences by Evita). I originally installed them on my Android 4.4.4 phone and they worked beautifully--there are audio files associated with most/all cards.

Then I synced with Ankiweb for the first time, overwriting what I had there with what was on my phone. Since then when I try to study the cards on my phone, I see something like:

가방이에요.[sound:itsabag.mp3]

instead of the usual play button. I have checked and the files are still on my phone, under 'Device storage > AnkiDroid > collection.media' AKA '/storage/emulated/0/AnkiDroid/collection.media/itsabag.mp3'.

Similarly, on the desktop and web clients the cards do not play the audio, although the files exist on the computer (and presumably online).

I tried deleting and reinstalling the decks and they just end up in the same state, down to which cards need to be studied.

Any clue to what is happening? I haven't found records other people having this problem after a sync--perhaps Anki is looking for the files somewhere else and I can't find the config. I am a somewhat new user so I don't have a good feel for debugging Anki problems.

Up until this point I have been very happy using Anki and I hope to get back to using a functional setup on all my devices.

Can you export the deck and upload the apkg here please?

Hello Tim,

Here is an example of a deck with audio that does not play:

I imported that deck into 2.5 alpha 6 and it works fine. What version are you using?

I am running version 2.4.2.

Try deleting the deck on AnkiDroid, and then re-importing the apkg you sent me.

If that doesn't work, try subscribing to the beta channel:

I tried deleting the deck and importing with no effect.

I tried the beta channel (I got 2.4.3b2) and that did not fix it, I also tried another cycle of exporting, deleting and importing.

Previously I tried deleting the deck altogether and starting fresh; that also did not work.

Is there a setting I could have changed that might have this effect? I can't seem to find anything path-related that I might have messed with, but it is possible I did.

No there aren't any settings which would break things like that, and it sounds like the same thing is happening in Anki Desktop as well, so I guess there's something weird going on with your collection.
Have you tried doing "check collection" and "check media"?

In the worst case you can create a new empty collection (for example change the path on AnkiDroid from /sdcard/AnkiDroid to /sdcard/AnkiDroid2) and then import each of the decks, which must work since it works on my device.

Ugh, sorry I forgot about one horrible setting which will do exactly this...
Settings -> advanced -> simple interface. Probably you have it enabled.

We really need to remove this setting

Ugh indeed, that fixed it! I did not make the connection when I changed that setting.

Perhaps a more descriptive note in the settings about what this feature does would be appropriate. Right now it is not completely clear which functionality breaks when it is on.

Thank you for persisting with me.

We're going to outright remove this feature instead. This problem happens quite regularly.

Tim, did you have any plans of removing it or do you want me to do it?

If you could remove it that would be great. You mentioned that you were thinking of ways to make the reviewer code more efficient and readable in general, so I haven't really touched it.

Hi, I just came across this thread, and I'm glad to see there is a simple solution, however I can't find 'settings' in the first place to change from simple interface. Where are you clicking to find settings? And is it on desktop and/or web and/or ankidroid etc.? If I click settings on ankiweb, which is where I am not getting audio, then I only have options to change my email and password.

That setting was removed more than a year ago... Your problem is certainly unrelated to this thread.
