If you make volume buttons as answer buttons, then one handed operation of AD on a phablet will be much more useable.

LG G3 anyone?

a decent use case would be if you took volume up to be next card or good answer, and volume down to be undo or again

then you'd basically only have to switch up input for the easy case (anki recommends good be your most common response, so long as it's sensible)

yeah that's a good layout, undo and again on one button, very smart idea.

I think it's best to take advantage of the volume button, the current user interface is very awkward for one handed operation, gestures are alright but not very good and some gestures are almost unresponsive. Zeemote does not work and has stupid layout and lack support and inconvenient.

The best option is to enable volume button as the only viable input option with tactile feedback.

I also need this feature: press volume button in order to activate green rating button (good). This option could be added to Gestures (or Navigation) menu. Then I can use AnkiDroid in slideshow mode (install TTS, select autoadvance of cards in settings) and use my hand only to press volume button when I feel that I remember a card well. It would be useful to learn words while I run.

Any Memo has such a feature - you can use volume buttons to advance and rate cards. For AnkiDroid maybe we could use QuickClick https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blor.quickclickgold
This allows assigning various actions to volume buttons, and no root required.
In Desktop Anki I can type numbers (1, 2, 3) to rate cards. Is it possible in AnkiDroid?
Can we somehow replace gestures with hardware buttons?
Maybe we can use Home2 Shortcut https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eikatou0.appspot.home2shortcut
to assign an action to double press of Home button?

Almost a year later, I found an app that lets you map the volume buttons to the keystroke of your choosing. Here's some information - Hope it's helpful: https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android/issues/3021#issuecomment-160243369
