I've just spent 20 minutes looking through the manual and searching online to no avail..and just tried to search this forum for a resolution again to no avail..

I have a bunch of cards of various card-types that I've consolidated into various decks. When I first created them I had no idea about card-types so I don't know how they ended up as they are.
The issue is that some card-types show the front first and some show the back first (again..I think I just didn't know what I was doing..) but they're just meant to be learned one way. So I can't have these different card types in the same deck. Some of these cards from this deck also share the same card type with cards in another deck which are to be used differently. So being able to change card type would be extremely useful. I find it very strange that this functionality isn't there...am I just completely missing it?

So I would like to change all card types to one form. But I can find absolutely no way to change the card type.

Can you offer any help or guidance?

Hi there. I looked, but I don't see a way to change note type either. However, you should be able, on the desktop client, to export all of those cards and then import them as the note type you want. When you export a card, it exports the fields in order, but doesn't actually export anything about what note type those cards belonged to -- just the data. With multiple decks you may need to export multiples times. And then you can import with the note type of your choice. You can also do several imports into a single deck. Hope that helps.

You can change note type on the desktop quite easily.
Go to the browser, select a set of notes you want to change note type for, go to "Edit -> Change Note Type...".

Ah yes. There you go, forgot about that. And since you can select all the cards belonging to a note from the left-hand side, you can then easily switch all the cards of one note type to another. Much faster than export/import.

ah, amazing, thank you!

That was really not obvious to my mind.

if any devs are listening...having the note type in the main window would be useful
and being able to right click to change note type or having a button at the top of the browser window (alongside add/info/mark) would be where I would naturally look for it.

Also, being able to mass-change a bunch of note-types to one note types would be good. Atm you can only work with one note-type at a time but can't sort by note type in the main window making it difficult to do it quickly.

I've done some basic (non-technical) web & software design in the past.. I'm not sure if you need UX volunteers but I would be happy to volunteer some time for user feedback.

Best,

DW.

This is the support page for the desktop app:

Since you need to define the mapping between fields of the two different note types, it does not really make sense to change multiple note types at once. You can however search for all cards within a given note type by clicking the note type in the browser. Sorting by note type is not so helpful I think, since you can only apply this operation with a given note type, so I believe it is easiest to restrict the search to a single note type.

We are always happy to hear about what users think.

But, to be honest, we do not have enough people to really implement any new features at the moment and we are mostly just trying to keep things working and fixing bugs. This applies to the Android app. For the desktop and iPhone apps, your best bet is to provide your ideas via the support site.

Also, I just want to point out that the code in question is from the desktop code (which is also user source and has a github repository). I agree some changes would be nice, and these suggestions currently pertain to changes in the Anki desktop client.

Note types are not specific to a deck. If you want to have a different one for each deck with custom styling, you'll need to add them separately via Manage Note Types (in the overflow menu on the main screen).
