Ever since I started using AnkiDroid, I've been experiencing a lot of
slowness and freezing issues. My tiny decks (about 100 cards) work
fine, but for the larger ones, I experience long delays (4-5 seconds)
after selecting Hard/Easy/Etc., or when clicking the Back button (to
return to the summary screen), and often the program freezes my whole
system when I'm looking at the question side of my card.
It has gotten so bad on one of my decks (12.2mb/2575 cards) that I
can't review 4 cards without having to restart my whole phone.

Is this a known issue, and if so, is it fixed in the next release
coming out? This is getting a bit unbearable.

Hi AnkiFan,

That's very worrying.
Which version of AnkiDroid are you using?
Could you please send us the 12.2mb/2575 card deck for tests?

You can create a new issue here:
http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

I'm using version 0.6.

It may be a coincidence, but I finally got the chance to upgrade my Android kernel to 2.6.32.9 today, and I have not experienced the freezing since then, though I still encounter intermittent lag after selecting Hard/Easy/Etc. on this and another deck.
It's also possible that doing some reviewing on my PC and then syncing helped, as I had 400 due cards and now have 230.

Should I still open a new bug case, or wait to see if the freezing happens again?  Are the delays after selecting Hard/Easy/Etc. a known issue?  I thought I saw a case about that.

I guess it wasn't Android that I upgraded to 2.6 as 2.6 doesn't exist yet :-).  I did install a major update for my phone, and AnkiDroid seems to be running better than before, but I can't say yet whether the freezing is gone.

Do you have a webcam to quickly take a video of the Hard/Easy/Etc lag?
That would help us judge whether it is normal or not.
You can upload it to YouTube and send us the link.

In January I had 2000 due cards in a 9000 cards deck, and it was not
that slow I think.

Thanks!

Have you tried, to optimise your deck (deckpicker --> long click -->
optimize)? Delays are often due to broken indices.

In any case there is light at the end of the tunnel: the new
libanki2.0-algorithm is way faster (but will need some time until it
will be released)

Cheers!

Hello,

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I've recorded a video of myself
reviewing a few cards on a 10.3mb/3663 card deck and uploaded it here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=79PG6ALE

@nobnago - Optimizing the deck doesn't seem to improve the speed much
if at all, though it did seem to help a little with the freezing when
I was encountering that. I'm happy to report I still haven't
encountered any freezing since I upgraded my firmware.

Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the video!

It is indeed much slower than what I experience, even though I am
using an old HTC Magic and a 9000 cards Japanese deck.

Have you tried another deck? For example the big RTK that appears
first in the shared decks. That would help us understand whether it is
something special in the deck file.

Cheers!

Dear AnkiFan,

While you are reviewing the deck, hit the home button and go look in
the Ankidroid folder in your file manager. Does this deck have two
extra files open? For instance, if your deck is called mydeck.anki,
does your phone also have mydeck.anki-shm and mydeck.anki-wal open?

I had one deck that ran as slowly as yours, and for whatever reason
it's the only deck I have that didn't open these journal files. After
running Check Database and Optimize Deck many times, I gave up and
stopped reviewing it on my phone. Eventually, I imported all of its
cards into a copy of a working deck. This now works at normal speed,
but I can't run Optimize Deck, or it goes back to the problem of not
having a journal. It's a workaround at best, but I hope that helps!

@Nicolas
This is actually occurring on three different decks. The only ones
where it doesn't happen only have about 100 cards each.

I did try downloading the RTK shared deck and it was blazing fast.
Though could this be because, while that deck has a lot of cards, most
of them are still in the New pile, so they're not interfering with the
algorithm that selects the next card to review?

@MFO
I tried what you suggested, and it doesn't look like those files are
getting created. I guess they're supposed to, yes?

Hi AnkiFan,

Could you please create a new issue here? And attach the lighter of
the decks where the problem happens.
