Well this is funny...the first google result for "android japanese font bold" was an AnkiDroid issue! Issue 658 describes this problem. It looks like the default Japanese font in Android doesn't have bold characters, and you're not loading the font correctly on AnkiDroid so it ends up using the default. Consult this part of the Anki manual to see how to use fonts across devices correctly.

I actually use the same deck and I've been using a font (VL PGothic) without bold as well. I've completely forgotten that I'd worked around it. What I did instead was to give it a colour instead of keeping it bold (it was almost unreadable as bold anyway).

Just as the title says, bolded font won't display in ankidroid for me. Just to clarify, the font *is* visible, it's just not bolded. I've attached pictures of the issue as well as my card template. Using 2.19beta ankidroid and 2.3.4 android.

#expression b means select the element with the id "expression" and then every <b> element inside it. Your template doesn't set ids for its elements, so it's not actually selecting anything.

So in the first line of your Front Template, add id="expression" inside the tag. Something like:
<span id="expression" style="xxx">{{Expression}}</span>

You can see the same thing in my template.

That's awesome how the template can work. For some reason, though, I can't seem to get your code to work on my desktop version despite tinkering with it. Thoughts?

FYI

The most recent comment is related to the Android version.
Eclair is not supported. Not sure if that applies in your case.

I posted a reply to that specific comment.

It seems this issue is not unique to me: http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/detail?id=939 and http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/wiki/UsingCustomFonts (bottom of the page). Are there any workarounds for this issue yet?

Sorry, I think I based my comment on the oldest instead of more recent.
I will investigate the details of the other comment.

What Japanese deck are you using? I can test on my end and see if I can help.

As an update, I still haven't fixed this issue, opting instead to just deal with it for now. Is this a bug or am I just not doing things right?

I downloaded it both on desktop Anki and Ankidroid 2.0.1
I can see the font bold on both. It is kinda hard to see on Ankidroid as the font is slight small. You can adjust the size of the display font in review or modify the deck.
In both the images did not show up nor the audio file played. I think this problem happened when someone uploaded the deck as .apkg to Anki web.
I'm attaching a screen shot from my Nexus 4 (4.2.2)
