Hi can you please check the about screen one more time... it should say the version number at the very top of the screen. If you recently re-installed AnkiDroid then it should be version 2.0. Anki2 is incompatible with AnkiDroid 1.x.
In general this sync issue shouldn't happen very often with Anki2/AnkiDroid2, however it can happen under some circumstances, for example if you edit a model.

Assuming you are using Anki2/AnkiDroid2 then this shouldn't be a problem for you; first sync with AnkiDesktop, then sync with AnkiDroid and select download from AnkiWeb... the collection from your desktop will then be available on AnkiDroid (problem solved right?). Both AnkiDroid and Anki make backups, so even if you make a mistake here, you can get your data back.

Hi,

I'm a new user of Anki (and AnkiDroid), and I'm sure there is a fairly simple answer to my question. But after about an hour of searching I have not found a solution to my "problem".

I run Anki 2 on my Windows 7.

I have AnkiDroid on my Android-phone. However, I'm not sure if this is AnkiDroid 1 or 2 (how do I find out? I looked for the "about" section of the app, but it said nothing about what version I am running.)

What I want to do is fairly simple. I have created a deck through Anki 2 on my computer. I want to have this deck on my phone as well. And I would like to have it synced, rather than having to drag it manually from computer to phone every time I add new cards

If I try to sync either through the computer or phone, I get the message that "your decks here and on AnkiWeb differ in such a way that they can't be merged together, so it's necessary to overwrite the decks on one side with the decks from the other. Do you want to upload the decks from here, or download the decks from AnkiWeb?"

Now, if I had AnkiDroid 2, this problem should not occur, right? I downloaded the app in early January from Google Play, by the way. Or could it be that some of the decks that I downloaded (through AnkiDroid) are of an old version?

In desperation I tried to uninstall AnkiDroid and reinstall it. My plan was to try syncing after a clean install (see if I could get my self-created deck on the computer over to my phone, and synced). But after a reinstall all my decks are still intact. And the sync-problem remains.

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of this...

The "about" section tells you the version in the title bar, like AnkiDroid v2.0. If you got it from the Play Store recently, you likely have version 2.

The message you get about syncing is something that happens when you make certain changes to your collection, like adding a note type. It's a regular occurrence in Anki when modifying your collection. It's not a problem. If you've been moving the files manually without syncing, then the reason the message comes up is because AnkiWeb doesn't know about the changes you've made.

Since your PC has the latest version you want to keep,  choose the upload option from your PC when syncing. AnkiDroid will now get the same message when trying to sync. Since you want AnkiDroid to have the new changes as well, choose the download option from AnkiDroid when the message comes up.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Did not notice that the title bar of "about" included version number. But indeed it does. Turns out that I have version 2 of AnkiDroid as well.

I ended up doing the following:

- Syncing from desktop (with the error message), so that the web version contained the decks I had in the desktop version (but not those on my android).
- Syncing from AnkiDroid, allowing the web version to override it.
- Re-downloading those decks I had on the phone (but not the desktop) to the desktop version.
- Syncing from desktop, so that the web version now contained all decks.
- Syncing from phone, so that the AnkiDroid also contained all decks.

I'm sure there is a way to do this that would not require me to loose my history on AnkiDroid. But I've only used the app for three days (and only gone through like 60 cards), so it was not a huge loss, and it was simple. For the sake of simplicity I think I'll stick to downloading, creating and editing from my desktop, and use AnkiDroid solely to sync.

In any case, it works fine now. Thanks again for the quick help, really liking Anki so far.
