Well, having found out yesterday that I won't be able to sync. my Anki
v1 and Ankidroid v1 decks for much longer, I've bitten the bullet and
upgraded to Anki/Ankidroid 2. It went smoothly, and I don't seem to
have lost anything.

I've managed (via Anki) to put all my currently unused decks into a
top-level deck called "Stored", and set the number of reviews for that
deck to zero, so that has solved the problem of what to do with them
(although I'd rather not see them at all!).

One question: on the main title page of Ankidroid 2 my decks are shown
in alphabetical order. In Ankidroid 1 I had things set so that they
were displayed in descending order of the number of cards due for
review. Is there any way to get similar behaviour in Ankidroid 2? If
not, is this useful feature likely to be added in the future?

The manual says that they are shown in alphabetical order and suggest some tricks to change the order, but it's not dynamic.
You can suggest this improvement to anki here: https://anki.lighthouseapp.com/projects/100923-ankidesktop/tickets
If i'ts not implemented in anki, it will not be implemented in ankidroid.

If you want to completely remove your unused decks, you can first use the export function in Anki Desktop to export the unwanted decks one by one, then copy the exported apkg files to the AnkiDroid folder on your device (also keep them on your PC as a backup). Finally delete the said decks from within Anki Desktop or AnkiDroid, and they will not be shown anymore. You can use the "import" function from within AnkiDroid at anytime to get the decks back.

I tried clicking on the link given by David, and I am taken to a page that says what was there no longer exists. (???) I too want to change the order of my titled decks. I'm studying Japanese. Kanji has no "alphabetical order." Plus I titled my decks based on Vocabulary, grammar points, culture, kanji, and then broke it down to the chapter in my textbooks in which they appear. I would like to arrange them in chapter order, but again, Kanji has no "alphabetical order."
