Now that I think of it, it is probably a version problem.

Make sure you are using:
- https://ankiweb.net/ (the "s" in "https" is very important)
- Anki Desktop 2
- AnkiDroid 2

Does it workj better after testing these 3 ones?

I downloaded the ankidroid 2 .apk directly from the website for
install on my tablet. After that, the login issue was resolved.

Yeah, those Android keyboards always put a space at the end after you click the suggested word. 
Click gmail.com when putting in email and you get a space.

I was having problems with this as well. It turned out to be the keyboard app that was installed on my phone (SwiftKey 3). When it auto-completed my e-mail address (to log into AnkiDroid2), it put a space at the end of it. After unsuccessfully trying to log in several times, I noticed the space, deleted it, and it logged right in.
