Ale, on Anki you can group the cards into different levels using subdecks. To do this on Anki, create a new deck, then use the syntax "PARENTDECKNAME::yourNewDeckName" when naming it.
Then in the browser search for the tag that you want to separate, and move all the cards to the new subdeck. Finally set the number of reviews on the subdeck accordingly.
Hopefully tag based study will be made easier on a future version of AnkiDroid

Hello everyone.

I created and imported/loaded a huge deck into Anki (basically ~5000 cards, but with the Recognition/Recall, I've got to 10,000). It's a Chinese Vocabulary deck, and it has tags that define what HSK level they are in and other grammatical categorizations: adjective, noun, verb, etc.

I synced and the deck is now in my AnkiDroid. Perfectly fine but there is a problem now:
  1. Can I study selectively only one HSK level (for example)? Or only verbs? I'd like to do this without Cramming. I'm not sure how it works but it seems it just extracts some cards from the Main Deck and creates another deck... Confusing and not comfortable whatsoever. I want to use one deck only, all I want to do is to filter by tags. Otherwise, what purpose do tags have? They'd be quite useless...
  2. Can I choose to see only "Recognition cards" or "Recall cards"? For example, if we had 人, the recognition card would show me the character and ask me what it means and its pronunciation (person - rén). The recall would show me this last information asking me to write the character. Can I choose to use only one of these two methods? How?
  3. Even if my Anki (both Desktop and Android version) are set to display cards randomly, all of them. Yet I keep seeing the cards in order! Why is this? The options are OK, I don't know where to tweak/touch buttons honestly.
In any case, the program is great and I'd like to say congratulations to whoever made this possible. Anki, even if it has some problems/confusing things, is currently for me the best program for reviewing. Keep up the good work!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ale

I'm a bit confused by this. If you've reviewed the cards, then they won't be due anymore. Closing and opening the deck shouldn't put them back in, let alone be in the same order. Did you create a filtered deck, by any chance?

Just so you're aware, there is currently a bug that doesn't shuffle new cards if you tick the option from AnkiDroid (ticking in desktop Anki and non-new cards are not affected). Are these all new cards?

The Pinyin thing sounds like a bug though. I'm not familiar with it, so I can't really comment, but you can open a new ticket for it on the issue tracker with more details (it would help if you attach the deck to it as well, if you can).

Thank you Tim, I'll try that. I think that simply having an option before starting reviewing to only certain tags, as we did in previous versions, would be much easier than this. As in, really easier and faster to do. I'm curious about the rationale for such a change...

Can you help me on the point 3? I'll explain... If I have Cards, each with the letter of the alphabet for example, if I start reviewing they appear as (1 is Recognition, 2 is Recall):

A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, and so on.

So I randomize and apparently it works, but... not really. Say the cards appear as G2, G1, R2, R1, and so on... Yes, it's not proceeding alphabetically, but it's not really random, because if I close the deck and restart, the same cards reappear and are reviewed in the same order.

All this randomizing does, is shuffle the cards but give them to me in that fixed order anyway. This is not helpful since I'll be learning by association, not because I know the card. How do I really shuffle? As in: each time I open the deck I see really random cards in random order?

I also have another issue: the generation of Pinyin and the appearance of cards...

Appearance: the html works only if I already have reviewed the card. The new ones appear without really taking it into account.
Same for Pinyin, it's not generated for all cards, just the ones I've seen already.

Is something wrong with the code?

Sorry if I'm asking many questions but these are not just bugs, they kind of ruin the experience and the chance to actually learn. Should I file these as improvements for the next releases?

Hey Ale

Many thanks. The trouble is that the cards are now MOVED to the subdeck. So if I finish 2 chapters and want to review them together, I can't. erm...right?

Hello Xuexi!

Adding cards can be done in the Phone, but I advise against it: it's long, uncomfortable and tedious. I suggest, you download Anki 2 for desktop, add the cards there and when the deck is as you want it, then simply sync from the phone. Right now the phone will get any preference that is on the desktop application, so make sure you get the preferences right there before syncing.

In order to be able to sync, you should create a free account on Ankiwebhttps://ankiweb.net/account/login

When you've created it, access from both the Desktop app and the Android app. Now, from the desktop app, click sync (round arrows button on the top-right), it will upload your decks to your Ankiweb account. When it's done (without closing the desktop app), open Ankidroid, and click sync here again. It will download the decks et voilà!

If you have other doubts, or if I didn't manage to explain something, just ask.

Hey Ale

I'm having a similar issue. I managed to create a new deck but I don't know how add cards to it. I don't think I understood it right. Adding cards with those tags can be done on the phone itself or you need to go to a PC browser?

Also, can you help me with syncing my AnkiWeb to my Anki PC?

Thanks,
HT

Once you search for the tag, confirm that you want to move all of the cards in view. Then press ctrl+A on the keyboard to select all, and press the change deck button and select your new subdeck.
If you want to limit the cards more, you can combine queries together as per the Anki 2 manual.
Please spend some time to read the Anki 2 manual if you have more questions about using Anki Desktop.
