I Am studying Chinese and Japanese simultaneously, in my deck I have both Japanese Kanji in PSmincho font and Simplified Chinese hanzi in Simsun font in two different fields. That way I can tell the subtle differences in characters sometimes occur between the two languages. However when I study the same deck on Ankidroid, both field displays Chinese variant. Why isn't the font information synced between anki and ankidroid? And if possible can I change font in Ankidroid?

hello I have managed to get Japanese font on some of my deck, but some other decks still shows simplified Chinese. And the browser does not display Japanese.

Any hints?

Hello:

The browser in 1.1.x does not use custom fonts.
This will change in the next version (2.x).

In terms of the font working in some decks but not others, I think it is probably because the name of the font is different in the different decks.
If you want you can send me two stripped down versions of the decks (one that works and one that does not, having a couple of facts in each would be sufficient) and I can have a looks.

hi Flavio

I double and triple checked that font in the fields in all the decks with Japanese are the same (Meiryo), but one of the deck just will not display Japanese.

How can I strip down an Anki file?

On the desktop, copy the .anki file and open it.
Go to the card browser and delete all but a few facts.
That should make the file reasonably small.
If the decks are small enough already, feel free to just email them to me.

Ok, I don't know what's up with Anki, the original deck of 6500 cards is 35mb, I deleted all cards but two cards, the deck is still 35mb. ?

You might to try:
- Tools -> Advance -> Optimize Database.
and if that does not work or it is not sufficient:
- File -> Export...

I have uploaded the files here, sample 1 is the one that doesn't display Japanese in Ankidroid, sample 2 display works fine, displays both Chinese and Japanese.

I have chosen Kanji like 直、臭、器、領 etc, these characters are differ slightly in Chinese and in Japanese.
sample 1.anki
Sample 2.anki

I wonder why you want to make me go through all the trouble of shrinking and uploading if you were planning to ignore me. Nice to see trolling in the Anki community

Dear Xiao:

I will probably have a look at it over the weekend.
I have been a bit busy with work in the last couple of days and I did not get a chance to look at your decks yet.
I did a very quick test but it was inconclusive.

If I do not get back to you by Monday, please send me a reminder.

Hi Xiao,

The steps you were asked to go through are useful, they make it more
probable that the issue will get solved.
Just because a person taught you these steps does not mean that this
person is automatically obligated to personally help you all the way
until resolution.

Keep in mind that AnkiDroid is a community of users helping each other
in their free time, so your best bet is to get your hands dirty :-)

Thanks for using AnkiDroid!

I would like to apologize for my remark. Anyways, the particular deck is now display the correct font all of a sudden. I can not conjecture what went wrong, could be something to do with phone.

Hello:

I finally got a change to look at the decks.

As it appeared from my initial inspection, nothing seemed wrong with the decks themselves.
I put them on my device, copied the font, and things just worked correctly.
Given your previous comment that things were not working for you, I tried to investigate this further.

After a bit of work I was able to reproduce the issue under the following conditions:
- use font A in deck 1
- download deck 1 to device
- add font B to the device
- edit the font in deck 1 from A to B
- sync deck 1 to the device

At this point, font B will not be used. The problem seems to be that the style of fields is cached and not invalidated when syncing the deck. Restarting Anki (this requires force stopping the application or restarting the phone) fixes the issue.

I will add a note to the Wiki about this.

I believe this is done very differently in Anki2, but it would be good to make sure this is not an issue there.

Thanks for your patience and support.
