I thought that I posted a question about this earlier today but I don't see it listed so it's possible that it didn't go thru.

I use anki for studying Japanese. I have a mac at home and used to have an iphone with the anki app. I just bought an android phone and now I am having a problem with the font. This seems to be a common issue where, for whatever reason, anki will render Japanese kanji as Chinese characters.

I have seen several (lengthy) threads about this but I don't see a place that gives concise instructions on the best fix. I'm a bit worried that if I experiment I might lose or somehow corrupt all my data. Can someone help?

Thanks.

Thanks.  I think that I followed the instructions listed there but it's still not working.

I downloaded DroidSansJapanese.ttf which appears to be a common font for this.

I copied it to documents/anki/user1/colleciton.media and renamed it _DroidSansJapanese.ttf

I changed the styling of my card to say:

 .japanese {font-family: "myfont";}

@font-face { font-family: myfont; src: url('_DroidSansJapanese.ttf'); }

(the template uses class "japanese")

I synced my mac's version of anki.

I synced my android's version of anki.

I expected to see the problem fixed, but didn't.

People regularly seem to have issues with custom fonts -- but they also seem to always be able to get it working out. I use custom fonts and have going on years now. Some fonts just don't work for some people, so I'd never try one font and leave it at that. Something else I would recommend is to just get ~any~ custom font to work, no matter what language, that way you can see that you can get one up and running, and use it as a template. Because if you're doing something off, no search for a working Japanese font will play out well. So try a funky English font, get that working, then you know you can set it up.

Try Google noto. If it doesn't work on anki desktop there's a problem with your template. If it works on desktop but not ankidroid, the font file probably hasn't been copied across properly

Also, if it works on desktop but not ankidroid, it may have copied across properly and ankidroid just won't support it. Font support, I believe, is subject to system/device specifics, updates, etc.

Google Noto should work on all devices

Oh I get it, I see the point you're making, about why desktop working but android not, with the case of Noto, would lead you to posit the font file not synced. I can imagine, though devices abound (like nooks, etc) -- so universally consistent font support is not reliable alone for determining the cause, especially if the file ends up staring you in the face.

I got it working. Thanks guys. BTW, I think that there might be an error on this page of the anki manual:

It says: "To add a font to Anki, it must be in the TrueType format. TrueType fonts have a filename ending in .ttf, such as "Arial.ttf"".

But when I downloaded the noto font, it was in .otf.
