"AnkiDroid isn't responding" error after media sync popup in v2.16alpha88

I added some notes with sound and pictures to my desktop Anki last night and synced them to AnkiDroid v2.16alpha88 this morning. The first time I had the media sync turned off so I didn't get the media for the new cards, as expected. I then enabled media sync in the settings and did another sync. I got the popup about syncing media, which went away on its own. After that, though, I keep getting system popups saying "AnkiDroid isn't responding" and giving me the choices to Close app or Wait. So far I have been hitting Wait. The strange thing is that the app responds fine to my actions and I can change settings and review cards with no trouble beyond the system popup.

Thank you for testing the new versions! The media sync is not great right now but this is a symptom that we have not heard of before.

Could you open a new issue with exact steps to reproduce (similar to what you included here) so we may track it?

I resumed doing my daily review while the system popups appear and got two of the cards that I added last night. They now have their media and sound files so it appears that the media sync got the new media.
