Hi,

I'd like to see the question first, then type my answer and then have
it compared with the correct answer. I activated the typing option in
the settings but nothing happens. What do I have to do?

Would be happy if anyone could help me :)

Regards

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

At the moment, I think, the answer field for comparison has to be selected
and enabled in the deck using Anki Desktop. See Issue 743 here:
http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/detail?id=743

To enable the field, open the deck in Anki on a desktop machine, choose
Settings > Deck Properties... > Basic, select a model and click Edit, and
click Card Layout. (Or, if all your cards use the same model, you can also
just click the Card Layout button while reviewing on the desktop.) Near
the bottom of the Card Templates tab is a drop-down list where you can
change "Don't ask me to type in the answer" to "Compare with field 'Back'"
or whatever field is appropriate.

Hi Mike,

this worked for new decks, thank you!

Unfortunately it didn't work for existing decks. Any idea what I can
do about it? Or do I have to retype my cards? ;-)

It ought to work if the deck is synced from Anki Desktop to AnkiDroid
after setting the deck's "Compare with" field in Anki Desktop, and "Write
answers" is still enabled in AnkiDroid's Preferences/Extras. Does
AnkiDroid still not let you type the answers, even after syncing?

No, it didn't work :(

But I opened a new deck with the correct settings and retyped
everything by now, so everything's fine ;)

Thanks for your help!

Just want to add that I was in the same predicament. And with a 2 year
old deck I didn't consider retyping the whole lot, thereby losing all
review data, a valid action.

After changing the model on my PC and synching with my mobile, the
input field still refused to appear. But I also noticed that each time
I synched again, Ankidroid would tell me that the remote and local
versions were different and ask me to choose. I first chose to keep
the remote (since that had the model change), but as that didn't help
I then chose to keep the local. And hurray, that seemed to do the
trick, because the next time I opened the deck the input field was
there.

Let me stress "seemed" though, because I was also trying other things
like rebooting, switching off and on the "Write answers" option, the
"Whiteboard" option, etc. Nevertheless I hope this info may be of use
to others.
