Hi,

I am learning Chinese characters and I am creating my own cards. I have very simple cards, one side is the character, other is the meaning in English. I created reverse cards, so I have them in both ways.

I would like to practice writing more now, so I'd prefer to see the English first. I tried several things and none of them worked.

I tried:
- Creating a filtered deck with deck:Hanzi card:1, when I filter on desktop it returns the correct number of cards (133, I have 266 total including both ways) BUT when I create a filtered card, it only creates it with 127 characters even though I set the limit to 99999. I tried it both on android and on desktop, neither worked.
- Creating a filtered deck with deck:Hanzi card:2, much to my surprise it created a deck with 118 cards ???
- Filtering in desktop and then selecting all and adding tag "card-1", the tag is created for 238 cards ???

It seems as if creating a filtered deck doesn't work. It creates decks with random number of characters. I'd rather not go through the list and figure out what is missing because these cards will increase in number.

Could anybody tell me how to create a filtered deck? Or I'm with creating a special study session, or anything like that.

I'm also open to suggestions for other tools that are easier to use than Anki.

Thank you,
Norbert

This is obviously a bit hard to answer without seeing the deck, but it's unlikely there are any bugs related to this. If you use the exact same search in the card browser and when creating a filtered deck with a high limit, these should return the same set of cards, except if any notes/cards have been suspended. Suspended cards can never appear in reviews. This seems to be the most likely cause to me why the counts should differ and suspended cards are highlighted in the browser, so you can check this easily. Otherwise, make sure that all notes have the same note type, in your case the Reversed type with two cards each.

Just to add to this: if you already did some reviews of the normal deck that day, some sibling cards might have been buried (this can be disabled if you don't want this, see the manual). These wouldn't be included in the filtered deck either unless you click "Unbury" first.

Thanks Eginhard, after unburying the cards, I have the correct number on my phone. One more question related to this. If I add new cards to the main deck that I'm filtering and there's a big enough number for the limit on the filtered deck, does the filtered deck get automatically updated? I would only study the filtered deck, so buried cards wouldn't cause a problem.

No, you'll need to manually rebuild the filtered deck. You can do this by long-clicking on the deck in the deck list and selecting "Rebuild" or by clicking on the numbers on the right hand side and clicking the "Rebuild" button at the top in the deck overview screen.
