There's no easy way to do this in Ankidroid, but you can do it with Anki Desktop as follows:

1) First sync Ankidroid with ankiweb, and then sync anki desktop with ankiweb to make sure you're working on the latest copy
2) Click tools->maintenance->check database. This will remove any unassigned tags; you can stop here if this has fixed your problem.
3) Go to the browser
4) Click on "whole collection" in the top of the left pane
5) Press Ctrl+A to select all the cards in the collection, then click the "Remove Tags" button
6) Type the first few letters of the tag you want to remove, or find it on the list then press the space bar
7) Repeat step 6 for each tag you want to delete
8) When you have selected all the tags you want to delete, press the OK button
9) Repeat step 2 to completely flush the deleted tags from the database
10) Press the sync button and choose upload to ankiweb if there are any conflicts

I have imported lots of data from csv files into cards in Anki/Ankidroid. A problem I'm having is when I use Ankidroid to edit cards, specifically to manage the tags a card has, there's a huge list of tags which seems to be data that was gleaned from my cards. When I go to add or remove a tag there's a huge list of tags which I didn't create and would never use. I don't have this problem with the same sync'ed collection in Anki, in Anki I only see the tags I've added to cards, but in Ankidroid I see this huge list of tags. Is there some way of removing all these undesired and automatically added tags in Ankidroid?

Tim,

  Thanks again!

Performing the check database function in Ankidroid seems to have removed all those unwanted tags! All the tags I wanted to get rid of were tags that were not in use in any cards. Somehow those tags all appeared after the initial import of csv files -> Anki -> Ankidroid. I forget how I got the data from Anki to Ankidroid, whether it was via moving the collection file or via Ankiweb.

Hello, sorry to reply to very old post but...

I did this and the old tags where removed from anki but they are still persisting in ankidroid. Is there a way to remove the old tags from anki droid?

You can do check collection on AnkiDroid as well. Forcing a full sync would work as well, but you'd have to be careful not to lose data

Thank you for the response.  When I follow the steps you stated, the dropdown box in the browser lists the active tags.  My issue is not tags in use, but other.  I see these unused tags when I tag a note from my phone but not the desktop.  Rebuilding the database does not rid me of these unwanted tags.

To reiterate, the only place I see an option for these tags is when I attempt to tag a note from my phone.  The tags do not appear on the left column of the browser and do not appear as an option to remove tags through the browser.

Thank you for your efforts.

fwiw, when I attempt to create a new tag from my phone and hit the checkmark to exit, the new tag does not appear.

Can you run "Check database" again on your phone as well and see if the tags are gone then? Please let me know if that doesn't work.

Yes, adding tags on the phone is not that smooth at the moment. The tag only gets added when you save a card with that tag added to it.

Hi, I've been having the same issue as stated above. In the card browser, as well as in the new card menu, AnkiDroid still allows me to pick old tags, despite having run 'check database' on Anki Desktop and forcing a full sync. I checked and double checked. The tags are gone in every deck, and Anki Desktop does not even list them anymore, but in those two situations they still appear.

Regards
