Hello,

Android does not provide natively a way to input using the phonetic alphabet.
There might be applications in the Play Store that allow you do so.

E.g., a quick search revealed:
even if I did not try it myself.

However, Anki and AnkiDroid both allow you to embed a font of your choosing. If you point to an IPA font (several exist), you can use that font for phonetic info. It's just like pointing to a hebrew font, or to a chinese font (like I do). That should address your desire. The directions for how to do this are here: http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html#installing-fonts

I would recommend you to look into X-Sampa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-SAMPA). It's a way to express phonetics via the common symbols.

Sorry for the confusion. They just mean your media folder -- and they are describing it for the Anki desktop client. You don't need to be rooted. Just put the font in the media folder in your ankidroid folder. When you sync with AnkiWeb, it would go into the right place if you ever use the desktop, the place they describe in the User1 folder.

I just realized, as far as I know, you actually will need to use the desktop Anki client, since I don't believe there is a way to alter card templates on AnkiDroid. One of the steps requires you to put a font declaration on the card templates.

install yes, but add to the card template, no -- you need the desktop client to edit the card templates

as far as I know

I think you might not need to add a phonetic alphabet font.

I added some reading on the desktop client by cut-and-pasting it into a card and that works just fine on my Android device (Nexus 5).

I would try that before trying to install a font for it.

it does make sense that if you use unicode data points, they may get properly resolved. Try to paste this in and see if it works:

ʃɪɕ

If it looks right in AnkiDroid, then you only need to type with ipa in unicode. Google for an ipa keyboard layout that will let you type that way.

Anki and AnkiDroid have a sync function that requires you log into an AnkiWeb account. It stores you decks "in the cloud" and let's you see the same cards/decks across all your devices.
