remove unwanted tags

I imported several decks that I have since deleted.  When I try to custom study and search by tag, or tag a card with my phone, I see a long list of tags that are no longer in use.  They also appear in the left side of the desktop browser.  I want to delete the tags even if they are currently in use.  How?

Hi,

you can remove unused tags by selecting "Check database" in the overflow menu of the deck overview. Otherwise you can only remove tags from individual cards, for operations on multiple cards at once you'll need to use Anki Desktop.

I've run the check database option to no avail.  I've tried using the desktop browser to remove tags from multiple cards, but when I select the tag from the left column, no cards appear.

You probably need to run "Check database" on both AnkiDroid and Anki Desktop to delete all unused tags. Any tags left after that will still have cards associated with them, which you can find by searching for tag:tagname in the card browser in either version. If you still have issues with tags on Anki Desktop afterwards, you should post in the forum for the desktop version: https://anki.tenderapp.com/discussions
