in my phone I have only 16gig internal memory and about 3000 cards that have media (images, sound, short video clips with mp4 formats) so the phone's memory was not enough. I did this to move ankidroid folder to external memory.

1- close the app, go to to this address on external memory: android/data
3- make a new folder named: com.ichi2.anki
4- move the ankidroid folder (on internal memory) to the above mentioned address so it would be:  /storage/sdcard1/android/data/com.ichi2.anki/ankidroid
5-open the ankidroid app and go to settings/advanced and set the following address for data location instead of storage/ankidroid:
 /storage/sdcard1/android/data/com.ichi2.anki
6-enjoy
maybe in your phone the beginning of the address changes. for exact address you can retrieve the address for example by a sample filej's properties (or details) using x plore or es file manager

Thanks so much for showing us how to do this.
Works great! As suggested, I also needed to change the beginning of the path in my case /storage/extSdCard/...

Thank you. For me this is function only if AnkiDroid app is installed in inner memory of the phone. When I move the app to the SD Card, AnkiDroid stops working. Pavel

Thank you SO MUCH... It works. I spent hours and days thinking there has to be a way for it,, nver found one. Your suggestion worked. And it works on my Samsung J2. I transferred the app to SD card, then did as you told ie. shifter the ANkidroid folder to sd... And it worked!.. Of course a new Ankidroid folder is generated in the device memory side when you use Anki next time, but it's size remains the same, while the Ankidroid folder in SD card grows in size... meaning all data is being entered in the sd card now.. THANK YOU

Where is step #2?

Well, step 2 is always ‘????’ with step 3 being “profit!” right?

Seriously though - I think the steps must have been re-edited many times, on reading them they seem like the proper and full sequence

In case someone runs into the same issue as me with your SD card running out of space for your media files -- you need to reformat your SD card from FAT32 to exFat, and redownload your media collection

Thanks!  The ES File Explorer was crucial for me because my directory path was much more complicated than listed above.  Thanks everyone!  Now I can get back to studying in peace.

Thank you very much, with a little changes in the address I was able to figure out how to do this.

It works. It's necessary to check the exact path with x plore. Mine path was: /storage/9016-4EF8/Android/data/com.ichi2.anki/AnkiDroid and I also copied all the files from the initial location of AnkiDroid in the internal memory to the found path.

Thanks a lot about your solution but at tab e it works a little bit different. At the 5th step you must write this  /sdcard/sdcard1/android/data/com.ichi2.anki instead of /storage/sdcard1/android/data/com.ichi2.anki

That makes me sad to hear - but please make sure you try the "lost my cards" FAQ entry on our FAQ - you might be surprised and be able to recover your collection from one of the auomatic backups

That's a huge storage saver! I've been getting periodic notifications about internal storage running out for way too long, causing a neurotic deletion of photos and videos... Now I have over half a gig of wiggle room back!

I used EZ File Explorer and found my file path is /storage/3061-3131/Android/data/com.ichi2.anki/AnkiDroid/

All other file managers said my SD Card was called "SD card" instead of "3061-3131" so, yeah, get that specific path locked down!

Hi, you can use any file manager for that purpose, you don't need ES file explorer. And don't worry, you won't lose any data when you uninstall ES file explorer.

Good luck

This was immensely helpful to me. I did have an issue with my media collection though - I hit error messages on syncing, and the sync would quit. I ended up formatting the SD card as exFAT, and using a terminal command (rsync) to manually move the media files from desktop Anki to AnkiDroid. It took me a good long while to figure out, so I wanted to share my steps in case someone else stumbles upon this great page. This includes OP's instructions with extra steps. Definitely try OP's simple guide first.

My setup: MacBook Air, Catalina 10.15.4 ; Samsung Tab A 2019 ; Samsung EVO Select microSD Memory Card 32GB
