I don't think there's any solution from within AnkiDroid, but from Anki Desktop you can export the decks you don't want to use to apkg (include scheduling information) and then delete them from your collection, which will achieve the same effect. When you want to use them later you can reimport them and your scheduling information will be intact. I've made an enhancement request to include an export function in a later version of AnkiDroid, but it may not get done anytime sometime soon.

I certainly use Ankidroid in this way.  I haven't yet changed to Anki 2 and Ankidroid 2, partly because of lack of time to do it but also because people seem to have had problems with the change, so I thought I'd wait for Ankidroid 2.0.1.

Now you've given me another very good reason to stick with Anki/Ankidroid version 1 for as long as possible!

Oh, thanks very much for the request!

The other aim of my post was to know if there are other people like me, e.g. if it's a typical use case.

Hello,

You might want to know that syncing with AnkiWeb 1 will stop working on February 4th, according to the notice at the top of http://ankiweb.net.
So you might want to consider upgrading soon.

That said, 2.0.1 is likely to come out soon. We just need a bit more testing.
Note that 2.0.1 will not include support for profiles but is focused on critical bug fixes.

Hello Olga,

On the desktop, it is possible to switch between profiles.
Profiles are used to manage completely independent accounts, associated with different email addresses.
This is helpful if you want to share a computer between two different individuals.

This feature is currently not available on AnkiDroid.

An alternative that you might want to experiment with is to associate different deck options with different decks.
I am not sure if it is possible to set maximum limits for new and review cards to zero and so, in practice, disable a deck.
Note that deck options are shared between decks: I would try to create two sets of deck options: active and inactive.
Then assign the options to the different decks, based on which you want to be active and inactive.
I would suggest creating a couple of small decks for testing and try this out on the desktop instead of AnkiDroid.
If this works, the deck options will be actually synced to AnkiDroid as well, and you might be able to do something similar to what you used to do with Anki 1.
As I said, I have not tried it, so I am not sure if it will work.

It's not planned for AnkiDroid anytime soon.

Olga,

As Tim said, profile support is not currently planned for AnkiDroid.

However, I do not think it is the feature you want, since it is not possible to move decks between profiles and you will need to use multiple email addresses.
