I find the "Undo review" button rather dangerous. It is easy to
accidentally press, and it could undo quite a bit of work. Why is it
there, i.e. what purpose does it serve? Has anyone ever actually
needed it?

I suggest that since it is too easy to do damage and that it serves
little or no purpose, that the "Undo review" button be either buried
in a menu or removed completely.

1. yes, it is important and it has it's purpose. May be not useful to you but it is important to me and many others. It's purpose is to undo you review (kinda obvious, isn't it), for example, when I review cards fast, I often press the wrong button, I'll undo and press the right button.

2. How can you "accidentally" hit the undo button? The undo button is all the way up on top right of the screen. Unless you have Parkinson's disease or something, I don't get how you can hit it, can you please show this to me with a video, because the only way I can "accidentally" hit it is by stretching my right thumb all the way to the top right corner of my phone. Maybe the issue is with you and not the location of the button here.

3. Rather dangerous and do damage? What damage are you talk about? Undo button only undo one card review, if you do "accidentally" stretch your right thumb to hit the Undo button, is it really considered that much damage to do two more clicks to Undo the Undo button?

So in conclusion, the Undo button has it's purpose and I use it. It's not dangerous because you can't "accidentally" hit. Two extra clicks is not "quite a bit of work".

I think dotancohen is talking about the "undo review" button (shown when you reach the end of the deck study session), not the "undo" button (shown while reviewing).
I also don't really see any feasible situation where this would be necessary...

I use the undo review button in the action bar as well, as I also make mistakes when answering cards.
Assuming the one during reviews is useful, I think the one at the end of the study session is also useful
because it is the way to undo a review at the end of a session, i.e., if I make a mistake while answering
the last card in a session.

That said, I am not sure if it needs to be as prominent and whether there are better ways to do this.
For example, I use suspend much more often than undo, but I am not sure if my use it typical.

I checked, the "undo review" at the end of the review still undo only the last card. Not really any "damage".

There are four buttons at the "congratulations!" screen. I personally find two of them is more redundant then Undo review button.

Undo review button, (undo the last card)
Open Other Deck (pointless, double back button does the same thing)
Custom Study (useful)
Back to Study Screen (pointless, back button does the same thing)

If OP is talking about the this "undo review" button, then it can be solved by moving this button from it's current location to the action bar for better consistency with in review "undo" button. If OP is talking about the "undo" button during a review, I find it to be the most used button after review buttons.

Regardless, I have been using Ankidroid for long time now, once I become proficient with the app, I almost never hit the "undo" or "undo review" button accidentally. When I am reviewing cards, my thumb(s) is always hitting "show cards" and a grade button, and when I are done review the deck, I always hit back twice to the main deck screen.

Yes, I am referring to the "Undo review" button that is presented when
there are no more cards to review.

From what I've read from others in this thread, the button should
probably be moved to the action bar and renamed "Undo last card" to be
more consistent with the in-review "undo" button and to have its
purpose made clearer.

Thanks.

Hi Tim

Do you think the "Open Other Deck" and "Back to Study Screen" buttons should also be removed? Both buttons are redundant as their function can be and should be completed by only the back button. By removing these two buttons can also make the "congratulation" screen less cluttered and more consistent with Google API guidelines and overall Android user experience.

AFAIK, the Google API guidelines suggest that the hardware back button should take the user to the previous screen (which I guess would be more like undo for the current example), and the app icon in the top left should have a back arrow which takes the user to the parent view (i.e. "back to study screen"). Wouldn't this make more sense? I think it could be a bit of a controversial change!

I see, developers probably have their reasoning.

Hope other users to chip in their opinions on this.
