AnkiBerry, the Blackberry port of AnkiDroid, should now be live on the Blackberry portal.  I believe it will only show up for the new Blackberry 10 and maybe Playbook as well, though I don't have either one so I can't really  tell (I only have a dev device).

Hope you guys enjoy.   Thanks to Nicolas for all his help getting it ported.

It's a lot easier to port an android app to blackberry than it is to port to a windows phone.  :)  I have a lumia 920 now.. I'd love to see it on windows too!

1154020002: Is BlackBerry OS5 capable of running Android apps?

All:
By the way, it seems that there are 3 "Anki" apps on Appworld:
http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/search/anki/

It is not a real problem, several maintainers can co-exist, but it is
a duplication of efforts.

By the way, Shawn, I see your version is set to "Version: 1.0", could
you please instead set it to the same version number as AnkiDroid?
(for instance 2.0.1) that would make it easier for users to understand
the AnkiDroid documentation/changelogs.

Cheers!

How about you upgrade your phone instead of asking a Android app developer to make an app for a phone that is 5 years old from a completely different OS family.

I don't know Nicolas. Because I'm only using BlackBerry Bold 9000 or lower model. When I install any apps for my phone, the extension of those file are: .cod, .jad, .alx.
I'm using Anki Desktop on my PC (anki-2.0.8), and it's great. But without Anki on the phone, feel like something's missing. Hope you can support for Bold 9000.

Best Wish!

Hello,

AnkiBerry will only work on BlackBerry 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlackBerry_10), which is available only on the newest devices.
All existing BlackBerry devices (except the Z10 and the Q10) will not be able to run Android applications, and therefore will not be able to run AnkiBerry.

Developing an application for BlackBerry is not part of the aims of AnkiDroid, and I have not heard of any BlackBerry developer who is planning to take on that effort.

Damned ! Still impossile to use properly Anki on a BB10... Why such discrimination against BB users !? The apps AnkiBerry availabe (3 of them, using version 1.0.32.0 installed in Jan. 2013)  are very unstable and close suddenly after reviewing a few flashcards.

I am missing Anki and all the decks I have shared with the community!

Seems like author of the port don't care at all. Probably he got his money for porting and lost interest to the platform. Judging by a backtraces that is was able to find online, BB10 users have the very same problem as Playbook users. For me it usually helps to avoid tapping on a free space on a screen. Being accurate enough usually helps me keep Ankiberry stable enough. Can you confirm, that you also have 2.1 alpha1 version? Is it shows pictures and plays sound on your device?

Hi,

I just bought a new BB Q10 hoping to be able to use Anki on it.
But there is a bug : after a few cards reviewed, the app closes suddenly "Fermeture soudaine de l'application AnkiDroid (du processus com.ichi2.anki)"

I've tried with the other version of Ankiberry available on BB My World store (version 1.32.0 and 1.32.1, online since Jan.2013), but the same bug happens anyway. Very frustrating.

Hope you can fix this.

Well how am I gonna what this...

Blackberry was a small old sinking ship, you decided to board the sinking ship knowing that there are much larger, faster and safer ships on the market.

So now you shouldn't really complaint about the ship you're on is sinking and you're about to drown. You have two choices stay on the sinking ship and pray someone will fix the sinking ship or you can jump ship to the larger, safer, faster, better Android ship.

There are 80 millions BB users around the globe, it might not be the fashion monopolistic brand in the US at the moment, but it still a significant share of the smartphone market in many countries...

You might want to check your facts, these are BlackBerry users numbers not BB10 numbers. There is only about 1 to 2 millions BB10 users. BB10 is a niche product at best, it will never get massive adoption and will never have the app ecosystem like Android or iOS, so I don't know why you think this is a discrimination? There is no discrimination, there is just no market, it makes no economic sense to develop and maintain an app for platform that has only 1 million users. Plus if you want to complaint, do it on a BB10 forum, complaining on a Android app forum will not convince anyone.

Maybe someone nicer will comfort you later on, but seriously, if you want to use a niche OS, then suffer the consequences, like a linux user complaining not getting Photoshop...

Hello,

The BB10 port has been maintained by people who took AnkiDroid and re-packaged it and adapted to work on BB10. Something similar happened with AnkiDroid for the Amazon Kindle, so this is not unusual.

Without someone who is committed to the platform and can keep things up to date, however, I imagine that the BB10 port will be always lagging behind, sometimes many versions behind. This is not because of discrimination: after all, AnkiDroid's aim is to port Anki to Android not BB10. It is great that it is possible to get the application to work on BB10 as well with limited work, but unless there is a group of developers working on it, I do not expect things to change. AnkiDroid itself is entirely a contributor driven project, with nobody working full time nor being paid for their labor, and which is moving quite slowly compared to other better staffed projects, and taking responsibility for an additional platform is not something I personally plan to do, especially since I do not have even a BB10 to test things on, let alone the time to work on fixing any BB10 specific issues.

What I can offer is that if you are able to find a few developers who are committed to the BB10 platform, I am happy to act as a liaison between them and the AnkiDroid community, so that we can get the BB10 version updated regularly.

Ok, thanks Xiao and Flavio,

following your advices, I've posted similar requests in BB10 forums, and I hope a sympathetic developer/user of BB10 will adapt the app 'Ankiberry' so it works properly. It is very frustrating to see 3 Anki apps in the BB MyWorld Appstore, and none of them stable. Ankiberry closes suddenly after reviewing a few flashcards. I don't know how much work is needed to get Ankidroid adapted for BB10... I had hoped  the bug could be fixed quickly, in the interest of both Anki and BB10 users, but apparently it's not that easy.

As a linguist, I am not an expert in IT nor in market dynamics but I do miss a lot my Anki decks on my smartphone.

In fact, it took a couple of hours to get a version I'm pretty happy on my Playbook. I had a plan to hit appworld with 4th Anki build, but didn't had enough time to do this. Never tested it on BB10, but if you have an idea hot to install unsigned version to your device I can send you a BAR. If you'll chose to wait for appworld, there is a way to make AnkiDroid build of your chose more stable: just go to Preferences->Dictionaries and uncheck "Allow text selection". It should make you Anki much less crashy, but getting audio to work will require a newer version. I hope it'll help.

Hi dev_temp,

Thanks for getting involved!
Could you please post the source code to Github?
That way, other people will be able to benefit from your fixes, and even modify your code in the future.

Thanks a lot!
