Herbert Mehler aims to produce uniqueness by planning every single detail of the work, starting from the idea to the end, in order to form a “whole” from identical modules. He reflects the beauty of the imperfection in nature while creating his sculptures where there are no straight lines or slat spacing that resembles another. By using this technique he makes every piece as unique as possible. ‘WABI-SABI’, the title of the exhibition, originates from 16th century Japanese aesthetic culture, reflecting the authentic character of an object and not the perfection of its beauty. Finding beauty in every aspect of imperfection in nature, Mehler manages to shape materials such as steel, bronze and aluminium through fine, linear folds and symmetrical curves into floral forms of nature. The exhibition “WABI-SABI” featuring Herbert Mehler’s extensive selection of works including sculptures, drawings, paintings and iron casting pieces can be seen at Anna Laudel Düsseldorf until 14 January 2023.
