I just played with NeoOffice/J 1.1 - The Mac OS X (Carbon/Java) port
of OpenOffice 1.1.4. If you have Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you may be
pleased to see Tamil Unicode working flawlessly in this release. You
may download it from OpenOffice.org directly. When you choose the
Macintosh platform, you'll be given a choice between this and the X11
version. You may want to choose NeoOffice for a look and feel closer
to Mac OS X *and* to work with Tamil text. I hope a localised version
for Tamil will be out soon.

Another Open Source application that looks promising for Tamil Unicode
on Mac OS X is AbiWord. I am able to get the menus in Tamil with this
one. However, there seems to be some problems with the text
formatting. Since Tamil was only included in Tiger, it may be a good
idea to log this as a bug at their site: http://www.abisource.com

You may also set the locale to get your date, time and other info
displayed in Tamil or even create a Tamil account name - the system
transliterates your account ID. Open System Prefs, Select
International, go to Formats Tab and set Region to India (Tamil).
Friends outside of India can change the currency settings. I hope we
can also change the number format as well later.

Have fun!
