THE ICT EXCELLENCE
AWARDS 2005
Kuala Lumpur, 6 September 2005 - The ministry of Energy, Water and Communications ("MEWC"), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation ("MOSTI"), Malaysian National Computer Confederation ("MNCC") and Maxis Communications Berhad ("Maxis") today conferred honours to individuals, schools and entrepreneurs for contributing to the development of ICT in Malaysia. The winners of the awards have been recognised as models of exemplary practice by using ICT effectively in the capacity of teaching, learning and leadership.
In the newly introduced category of KTKM-Maxis Cyberkids Campus Excellence Awards, the winners are:
The awards for "Best Telecentre" and "KTKM-Maxis Campus Excellence Awards" are added this year in tandem with the Ministry's objective of increasing active rural Internet Centers and libraries that cater well to the use of local communities. MEWC's Secretary General Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie said: "This is the eighth year we have run these awards and they are continuing to prove a huge success in providing a platform for ICT practitioners to share their expertise and experiences with others in their field. "We continue to encourage students, teachers, head principals, advisors, members of professional bodies to nominate colleagues whom they feel have demonstrated excellent ICT practice on a daily basis so we are able to acknowledge their service for greater good." Maxis' Chief Executive Officer Dato' Jamaludin Ibrahim said: "Maxis champions ICT excellence. Our involvement in ICT Excellence Awards is consistent with out commitment to corporate social responsibility. Through Maxis Bridging Communities, we improve computer literacy among students and teachers who reside in rural and semi-rural areas - progressively increasing their opportunity to succeed in today's digital environment." At the same time, MNCC's President YM Dr. Raja Malik Mohamed said: "It is my fervent hope that the ICT Excellence Awards will continue to progress with the inclusion of appropriate categories in the future. Awards such as these are essential to enable talented Malaysians to showcase their excellence in ICT and to provide inspiration to others on the pursuit of excellence in ICT." The competition started in early of August 2005. Nominations were received by the deadline of 5 August 2005. BACKGROUND (Extract) Most Creative Mobile Application The award for the Most Creative Mobile Application goes to "AnjalMobile", by Murasu Systems Sdn. Bhd. (research arm of Murasu Communications (M) Sdn. Bhd.). AnjalMobile is a multilingual mobile communication platform that currently focuses on Tamil-English SMS transliteration. It is the world's first SMS software in the Tamil and Sinhala languages, while other languages such as Khmer, Lao, Malayalam and Telugu are currently being developed. AnjalMobile was launched in Singapore with a major media company. It is now being deployed in Sri Lanka and India. It was also recently soft-launched in Malaysia with a major local media company.
