Unplugged is the first live album by American singer Alicia Keys. It was released on October 7, 2005 by J Records. Recorded as part of the television program MTV Unplugged on July 4, 2005 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the album includes songs from her first two studio albums Songs in A Minor (2001) and The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003).

Other critics were more ambivalent. Rolling Stone gave it three stars out of five and said the album "bursts with sweet soul that seems to feed off the adoring crowd."[16] Allmusic gave it two and a half stars out of five and stated, "Over these rhythmic vamps, Keys does have some impressive vocal runs where she departs from the original melody and glides by on the sheer sound of her voice, but when the songs are reduced to their bare essence, her vocalizing doesn't become a way of telling a story, it becomes the reason she's playing music in the first place."[9] Neumu gave it four stars out of ten and called it "just another bloated arena show."[23] Uncut gave it two stars out of five and said, "Keys hasn't the charisma to indulge in the inter-song banter here, which breaks up any soulful flow that might develop despite her sharp, hectoring vocals."[19]

Unplugged debuted atop the US Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, selling 196,000 copies in its first week and becoming her third consecutive number-one debut on the chart.[1] In its second week, it registered a 58-percent sales drop to 83,000 copies, falling to number nine on the Billboard 200 and number three on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.[25][26] The album left the top ten of the Billboard 200 in its third week, falling to number 12.[27] By February 2006, Unplugged had sold over one million copies in the United States.[28] Its CD was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 25, 2008 for shipping one million units,[29] while its DVD was certified gold on November 22, 2005 for shipping 50,000 units.[30]

In a world of one-hit wonders, only a truly special artist can carry a 16-song, 72-minute live set. Such a performance requires outstanding and consistent vocals, instrumental perfection, an endless supply of hot songs, excellent lyrics and an audience-friendly presence. The woman for the job is the beautiful and exceptionally talented Alicia Keys, whose new live CD, "Unplugged," has put MTV's live concert series back on the map.

"Unplugged" is a collection of Keys' top tracks and a sampling of what's to come. Songs like "If I Ain't Got You," "You Don't Know My Name" and "How Come You Don't Call Me" are delivered with the same striking voice that has graced Keys' albums, "Songs In A Minor" (2001) and "The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003)."

From the first few tracks, Keys establishes the flow of the album, with each song leading right into the next. In fact, it is almost impossible to press the stop button; the whole CD sounds like one song. The fluidity of Keys' music can be attributed to her presence, her attractive voice and her outstanding band.

The album opens with the one-two punch of "Karma" and "Heartburn," which meld together to sound like one song. The tracks garner listeners' attention, establish Keys' vocal proficiency and prove her backing band's adaptability and creativity. Though the tandem of starter songs hails from 2003, it takes listeners to the same R&B nirvana they did when she first recorded them.

The set concludes with the upbeat "Love It or Leave It Alone/Welcome to Jamrock," on which Keys invites rappers Mos Def, Common and up-and-coming reggae star Damian Marley to the stage. The track is a fun, wild and fitting finale to a deep R&B album. Keys provides the choruses for the two-in-one track, even imitating the reggae sample of "Up in the streets/ They call it murder" for Marley's "Welcome to Jamrock."

There has always been something captivating about your favorite artists unplugging their instruments and going acoustic. Maybe the appeal is a response to being inundated with stimulation, or maybe it is just impressive in its own right. The unplugged album succeeds by nature of not being flashy: If the artist triumphs, it is all the more impressive and a testament to their craft. Music does not get any more raw or vulnerable than this.

Best of Art of Noise
Art of Noise were an English avant-garde synth-pop group formed in early 1983. The group's mostly instrumental compositions were novel melodic sound collages based on digital sampler technology, which was new at the time.
In 1986, the album track Paranoimia achieved some success when a remix of it was released as a single with overdubbed vocal samples provided by Matt Frewer as the supposedly computer-generated character Max Headroom.

Do you ever feel like technology has become an intrusion on your music enjoyment? Do you prefer listening to acoustic instruments over snazzy synthesizers and kill-joy keyboards? If so, MTV Unplugged albums may be worthy of your attention. MTV Unplugged is a television series featuring acoustic performances by various respected musicians. Many of the artists who appeared on the show released their Unplugged concerts as albums. These are some of my favorites:

John Legend's first solo album, "Get Lifted" (on Getting Out Our Dreams Music/Sony Urban Music/Columbia Records), dropped three days after Christmas 2004 and struck the resonant opening chord for a year that's just reached a dizzying crescendo with 8 Grammy nominations.

Get Lifted debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and #1 on the R&B Album sales chart has since gone on to achieve RIAA gold and platinum status. Legend hit the road twice in 2005, first as the heralded opening act for Alicia Keys and then as the star of his very first headline tour. He's off to tour South Africa in the new year and is working on the successor to "Get Lifted."

Following Dove Cameron's viral, platinum-certified 2022 hit "Boyfriend," expectations were high for the artist's first studio album. The singer and actress will release Alchemical: Vol. 1 at the top of the month.

Eight years after This Mixtape Is Fire, Dillon Francis' latest "turned out better than I could have ever imagined," the DJ and producer shared on Instagram about his forthcoming album, This Mixtape Is Fire TOO.

"The whole goal of this album was to make amazing songs with artists I love and respect," he added. The 14-track record features several 2022 singles, such as "Free" with Alesso and Clementine Douglas, "LA On Acid" with Good Times Ahead, "Pretty People" with INJI, "Don't Let Me Let Go" with Illenium and Evan Giia and "buttons!" with Knock2.

The end-of-year celebrations will start early for Alicia Keys and her fans. On Dec. 1, the 15-time GRAMMY winner will release a special version of her multiplatinum sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, in order to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The Canadian singer has also announced an eponymous tour in support of the new album. McRae will visit Europe and North America from April to August 2024, bringing it to a close in Oceania throughout November.

Across 2023, we've been treated to a shower of fantastic reissues, remixes and/or expansions. From the Beatles' Red and Blue albums, to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, to the Who's Who's Next, the list is far too massive to fit into a single article.

Whether you view them through the lens of Black woman power or simply their unforgettable, snarling anthems, English punks X-Ray Spex made an indelible mark with their debut 1978 album, Germfree Adolescents.

This (quite belated) 40th anniversary edition continues its evolution in the marketplace. And better late than never: The Visitors was their final album until their 2021 farewell, Voyage, and on those terms alone, deserves reexamination.

A Portrait of the Queen 1970-1974 compiles her first five albums of the 1970s: This Girl's In Love With You, Spirit in the Dark, Young Gifted and Black, Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky), and Let Me In Your Life.

The fifth go-round contains the Afrobeat giant's albums Open & Close, Music of Many Colors, Stalemate, I Go Shout Plenty!!!, Live In Amsterdam (2xLP), and Opposite People. It includes a 24 page booklet featuring lyrics, commentaries by Afrobeat historian Chris May, and never-before-seen photos.
