The first chapter was released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on October 12, 2021, and later for Android and iOS on March 11, 2022. The second chapter was released for Microsoft Windows on May 5, and for iOS and Android on August 15, with a third set to be released in 2024. All chapters after the first will be released as downloadable content. The game garnered positive reviews for its gameplay on its initial release, but the second chapter received mixed reviews for its numerous bugs. Additionally, the developers received harsh criticism for announcing non-fungible tokens of in-game content.
The player receives a package that contains a VHS tape, which shows a commercial for the titular doll Poppy Playtime and tours of the factory before abruptly cutting to spliced-in footage of graffiti of a poppy, and a letter from the missing staff, requesting them to "find the flower". They then enter the abandoned toy factory and, after solving the code to a security door, acquire the GrabPack, which they use to unlock the door to the lobby. After entering the lobby, the player is introduced to Huggy Wuggy, who is on display in the center of the room. While trying to unlock one door in the lobby, the power suddenly cuts, forcing them to restore power in the power room.
Originally starting out as a Kickstarter campaign, the idea of Poppy Playtime was originally thought of by game director Isaac Christopherson, stating that people called most indie horror games "walking simulators", giving Mob Entertainment the idea to "create something with gameplay that doesn't feel quite so run-of-the-mill, while still staying exciting, terrifying, and unique." A trailer for the game's first chapter was uploaded in September 2021.[10][11]
The first chapter was released on Steam for Microsoft Windows on October 12, and later for Android and iOS on March 11, 2022.[13] After the first chapter's release, official merchandise of the game began being released, including T-shirts, posters and plush toys,[14][15][16] as well as official collectibles produced by Youtooz.[17]
All chapters after the first will be released as downloadable content.[6] A trailer for Chapter 2, named Fly in a Web, was released on February 22, 2022,[18] with several teasers later being posted to Twitter,[19] including a teaser trailer on April 9.[20] In preparation of the second chapter's release, the first chapter was made free.[21] The second chapter was then released on May 5, for Microsoft Windows[22] and then on August 15, for iOS and Android[23] and is estimated to be thrice as long as the first chapter.[24] Two teaser trailers for Chapter 3 were released on July 26, 2023, and August 6, 2022, respectively, with a slated release date of winter 2023.[25] However, due to several developers being laid off due to "creative differences", the chapter was delayed "several additional weeks into 2024".[1]
Poppy Playtime Playtime Chapter 2 hints at Poppy's goals and how she needs the protagonist to help her "set things right" going forward. While she isn't the only toy that receives ample screen time in the game's second chapter, Poppy goes from being helpful to being the most outright sinister of the toys. Though the lore of Playtime Co. has been expanded upon and some questions players had have been answered, more is teased in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2, which ultimately leaves players with more questions and uncertainty as to who can be trusted.
Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 continues directly after the end of first chapter, with the player in the room with Poppy's now empty case. It doesn't take long to find Poppy, who first gives the impression that she wishes to help the player escape from Playtime Co. and its murderous toys. The player takes on the role of a former Playtime Co. employee who has been sent a letter and a VHS tape saying that the employees who vanished a decade ago are still in the factory and need help. Despite having found the flower shown in the VHS, there remains more to uncover before the secret messages and lore of Poppy Playtime are fully unraveled.
This revelation that the children are being used for experiments is reinforced at the climax of the chapter when the player boards the train. As they're about to leave the factory, Poppy's tone turns sinister as she says that the player is too perfect for her to let leave and that they will help her set things right. The track for the train to take shifts, implying that the kids who passed the games would be taken on one track with the train, while the kids who didn't pass were able to leave the factory on the second track. Poppy sets the train to the track for kids who passed the tests, and Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 ends with the player being taken deeper into the Playtime Co. Factory, derailing the train, and finally losing consciousness.
One of the most rebellious experiments is Experiment 1006, referred to as "The Prototype" in one of the VHS tapes. The tapes also mention that the researchers suspect that Experiment 1006 is behind some events that occurred shortly before the tape was recorded. Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 gives further hints that Experiment 1006 might become the real villain of Poppy Playtime with Mommy Long Legs' comments as she's being crushed near the end of the chapter. She yells that the player is going to make her part of him, and then Experiment 1006 drags away half of her body that fell to the floor rather than being crushed. The person she is referring to is unclear, but it isn't a fate she wants.
The Poppy Playtime games are an interesting mix of horror micro-scenarios, with the overall narrative being punctuated by several terrifying mini-games. The second chapter of Poppy Playtime tasked the player with a few rounds of whack-a-mole, red light green light, and a really twisted game of Simon Says. What will the next chapter of the indie game involve, and more importantly, what is the Poppy Playtime Chapter 3 release date?
As mentioned above, Poppy Playtime chapter 1 is called A Tight Squeeze, and tasks you with exploring the abandoned toy factory while dodging the deadly embrace of the long-legged, long-armed, terrifying people hugger, Huggy Wuggy. In order to make it through the night, you need to solve a variety of puzzles, collect a specific amount of items, and avoid getting squeezed to death. Simple, right?
Fans of Poppy Playtime are thrilled that creators have revived the beloved indie horror game yet again in the highly anticipated third chapter of the franchise. Entitled Deep Sleep, Poppy Playtime Chapter 3 is described as the most terrifying chapter yet.
