I don't have a Kinect, but one of the first things I thought when I
heard about it was how cool it would be to animate a 3D character (or
control a computer using my own body. Since there is a driver and SDK
available for it, I'm wondering if the Animeeple folks have given any
thought to this kind of thing.

This is an interesting idea. Does the SDK cover pose fitting to the depth range data?

The Kinect is pretty cool because it uses IR to capture depth
information, something you can't do with an ordinary USB camera. At
the same time however, this technology severely limits accuracy for
full body motion capture because it prevents you from using multiple
camera angles at the same time. You could probably get some low
quality body tracking with one camera but I don't think it will allow
for very complicated motions because of self occlusion. For
complicated body motions (like walking around in a circle, crouching,
twisting, etc.,) you're much better off using iPi Studio and four to
six PS3 Eye cameras. Here's a test I did using four PS3 cameras to
illustrate:

BTW, iPi Software is working on a Kinect compatible version of their
software. I think it will be called iPi Studio Express and it sounds
like it might be free or at least very inexpensive compared to the
Basic and Standard version. Here's the link for it:

Oh, and just to keep this on topic, the iPi mocap data is fully
compatible with Animeeple! :)
