For new applicants of PAN card, the Aadhaar PAN linking is done automatically during the application stage. For existing PAN holders, who were allotted PAN on or before 01-07-2017 it is mandatory to link PAN with Aadhaar. The Link Aadhaar service is available to individual taxpayers (both registered and unregistered on e-Filing Portal). If you do not link your PAN with the Aadhaar till 30th June 2023, your PAN will become inoperative. However, people who fall under the exempted category will not be subject to the effects of PAN becoming inoperative.
Now, challan will be generated. On the next screen, you have to select the mode of payment. After selecting the mode of payment, you will be re-directed to the Bank website where you can make the payment.
From July 1, 2023, PAN will become inoperative for individuals who have failed to link it with Aadhaar and TDS (tax deducted at source) and TCS (tax collected at source) will be deducted at a higher rate.
In this regard, it is to be informed that the status of challan payment may be checked in the 'e-pay tax' tab of the portal after login. If payment is successful, then PAN holder can proceed to link PAN with Aadhaar," it had said.
The Income Tax department witnessed a significant problem related to linking PAN-Aadhaar numbers. Many individuals have encountered problems related to the mismatch of their names. Besides, many people have faced difficulty in downloading the challan after paying a fee for Aadhaar-PAN linking..
This problem is causing an obstacle for many. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has a solution available to resolve this issue. In its official Twitter handle, the income tax department clarified, in cases where fee payment and consent for linking have been received, but linking has not been done till 30 June 2023, the Department will duly consider such cases.
In a tweet, CBDT said: "Kind Attention PAN holders! Instances have come to notice where PAN holders have faced difficulty in downloading the challan after payment of fee for Aadhaar-PAN linking. In this regard, it is to be informed that status of challan payment may be checked in 'e-pay tax' tab of the portal after login. If a payment is successful, then PAN holder can proceed to link PAN with Aadhaar. There is no need of downloading of the challan receipt for linking PAN with Aadhaar. Further, as soon as the PAN holder completes the payment successfully, an email with an attached copy of the challan is already being sent to the PAN holder. In cases where fee payment and consent for linking have been received, but linking has not been done till 30.06.2023, such cases will be duly considered by the Department."
PAN is a unique number issued to individuals and businesses for tax purposes. However, the Aadhaar number is given to all residents. The income tax department has made linking PAN and Aadhaar cards mandatory to ease financial transaction processes.
"There is no need of downloading the challan receipt for linking PAN with Aadhaar. Further, as soon as the PAN holder completes the payment successfully, an email with an attached copy of the challan is already being sent to the PAN holder," it added further.
How to resolve PAN-Aadhaar Link failure/error: As the last date for PAN-Aadhaar linking is nearing, a number of users on social media are complaining that they are unable to link their PAN and Aadhaar after paying the Rs 1000 fees.
While several users are claiming that their PAN-Aadhaar linking is not complete due to name mismatch, some are saying that they are getting errors while making the payment for PAN-Aadhaar linking. Following is what such users can do, according to information available on the Income Tax website
The deadline to link the Permanent Account Number (PAN) with the Aadhaar has passed. Unlike previous instances where the government extended the deadline, this time there has been no such extension. Consequently, individuals who have not yet linked their PAN with their Aadhaar will face the consequence of their PAN becoming inoperative starting today, July 1, 2023. However, the income tax department has issued a last-minute clarification.
"As soon as the PAN holder completes the payment successfully, an email with an attached copy of the challan is already being sent to the PAN holder. In cases where fee payment & consent for linking have been received, but linking has not been done till June 30, 2023, such cases will be duly considered by the Department," the tax department further added.
The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar by paying a late fee of Rs 1,000 was June 30, 2023. Starting July 1, 2023, PAN will become inoperative for individuals who have failed to link it with Aadhaar, resulting in higher rates of TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source).
In the event that PAN becomes inoperative, individuals will no longer be able to access certain services that require the mandatory use of PAN. Additionally, if an individual has not yet filed their income tax return (ITR), they can only do so after linking their PAN with Aadhaar. The government has not released any statement regarding an extension of the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline.
In a bid to address the concerns raised by numerous individuals, the Income Tax Department has issued a clarification regarding the status of challan payment for Aadhaar-PAN (Permanent Account Number) linking. The department, just a few hours before the last date, explained the process on Twitter to avoid any last-minute hassles. It's important to note that the last date to link Aadhaar and PAN was June 30, 2023.
The Income Tax Department went on to provide some helpful information to assist individuals in this regard. As per the tweet, you can check the status of your challan payment by logging into the portal and going to the 'e-pay tax' tab.
The department has assured that the cases where fee payment and consent for linking have been received but linking has not been done until June 30, 2023, will be duly considered. It is crucial to remember that if the PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by the specified deadline, June 30, 2023, the PAN will become inoperative.
Initially, the last date to link PAN with Aadhaar was set for March 31, 2023. However, the Income Tax Department extended this deadline by three months until June 30, 2023. As of now, there has been no announcement from the department regarding a further extension of this deadline. It is worth noting that the deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN has been extended multiple times since it came into effect on July 1, 2017.
Every person who has been allotted a Permanent Account Number (PAN) and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number, must link their PAN with Aadhaar as per provisions of Section 139 AA of the Income Tax Act 1961. Further non linking of PAN with Aadhaar shall make PAN inoperative" and
As per Section 139 AA of the Income Tax Act 1961, every individual including Non-Resident Indians (holding PAN & Aadhaar number) is required to link their PAN with Aadhaar by 30/06/2023.
PAN Aadhaar linkage would be applicable for NRI / PIO customer who hold both PAN and Aadhaar. The NRI / PIO customer should update his / her residential status correctly with Income tax Department of India. If NRI / PIO customer does not hold an Aadhaar yet the PAN is made Inoperative by the Income tax Department, then bank will be construed to consider the NRI / PIO PAN inoperative on Bank record. The NRI / PIO customer will have to consult his /her Tax consultant in India to update his / her residential status on Income Tax Portal and make his / her PAN Operative.

Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act provides that every individual who has been allotted a permanent account number (PAN) as on the 1st day of July, 2017, and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, shall intimate his Aadhaar number in the prescribed form and manner. In other words, such persons have to mandatorily link their Aadhaar and PAN before the prescribed date (Presently, 31.03.2022 without fee payment and 31.03.2023 with prescribed fee payment). The prescribed fee of Rs 500/- till 30th June,2022 and Rs 1000/- from 1st July, 2022 to 31st March 2023 in a single challan will be applicable before submission of Aadhaar-PAN linkage request on e-filing portal.
The payments done through e-Pay Tax functionality or through Protean (NSDL) with Minor head 500 for an amount of Rs 500/- till 30th June,2022 and Rs 1000 from 1st July 2022 to 31st March, 2023 in a single challan, will be considered as valid for Aadhaar-PAN linkage.
