In C (Terry Riley)

‘In C’ is a semi-aleatoric musical piece composed by Terry Riley in 1964 for any number of people. It is a response to the abstract academic serialist techniques used by composers in the mid-twentieth century, and is often cited as the first minimalist composition.

Workers’ Union (Louis Andriessen)

This piece is a combination of individual freedom and severe discipline. Its rhythm is exactly fixed; the pitch, on the other hand, is indicated only approximately, on a single-lined stave. It is difficult to play in an ensemble and to remain in step — indeed, something like organising direct political action.

The Sonic Arts Ensemble was founded in the wake of the announcement of the closure of the School of Music at the University of East Anglia. The ensemble is proof of the quality, motivation and enthusiasm of the remaining students to engage with the sonic arts in order to develop their musical understanding and aesthetics.

The ensemble is a collaborative mixture of student and staff performers and composers, with an emphasis on mentoring and integration. It is developing into a self-determined creative ensemble, set to lead some of its own programme in 2013-14.
