Dear nathan,
Hosting a dinner party can be a simple and fun way to raise awareness
and funds for the Bradley Manning Defense Fund. Friendly conversation
over dinner is a great opportunity to reach out to connections who
might not already know about Bradley Manning's plight.
Bradley Manning faces a military court martial that may sentence him
to the equivalent of life in prison--for exposing the truth. There is
no evidence that anyone has even been physically harmed by the release
of this information, yet Bradley technically faces the death penalty.
For the first year of Bradley's pre-trial confinement he was subjected
to extreme and torturous conditions of confinement that were clearly
illegal and in violation of military regulations covering the
treatment of prisoners. Our international campaign of phone calls,
letters, vigils, and direct action, convinced the military to back
down and transfer Bradley to Fort Leavenworth in April. We've
confirmed that he is being treated appropriately at Fort
Leavenworth--for a pre-trial detainee.
A number of organizations have politically supported Bradley since his
arrest; however, the Bradley Manning Support Network is the only group
that took responsibility for providing Bradley with a civilian legal
defense team of his choosing. The donations you help raise for the
defense fund now will ensure that Bradley's legal team has the
resources they need for a fighting chance leading up to and during his
military court martial. Additionally, this historic case will not be
decided in a military courtroom alone, but in the court of public
opinion in general--and in the streets during Bradley's court dates.
This is why, after legal fees are covered, the Support Network also
engages in public education regarding Bradley's situation.
We now believe Bradley's legal proceedings will unfold into Spring
2012. We've projected that we can sustain our current
efforts--including the legal team and a team of full-time
organizers--by raising about $250,000 through the end of the
campaign. With the military dragging their feet on setting a pre-trial
date for Bradley, it's become somewhat of a challenge to sustain
general interest--including fundraising--for Bradley's defense. Your
dinner party will go a long way to help bridge this outwardly quieter
period in this campaign to save the life of a true hero.
