A product from the company Procter & Gamble has just recalled a dry pet food due to the possibility of Salmonella bacteria. Animals can get sick and pass this bacteria to people by simply handling the food, yet at this time, no reports of illness have been confirmed.

According to WebMd, every year there are approximately 40,000 cases of salmonellosis in the United States alone. For humans, children and the elderly, they can be particularly prone to infection as well as those with impaired immune systems. Animals and pets can also come down with an infection. <http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/food-poisoning/tc/salmonellosis-topic-overview>

Salmonellosis, also known as Salmonella food poisoning, is caused by the Salmonella bacterium. There are many different kinds of this bacteria, including Salmonella serotype Typhimurium andSalmonella serotype Enteritidis.

The foods recalled include the following, according to Food Poisoning Bulletin*: Eukanuba dog food from Large Breed Mature Adult to Small Breed Puppy and specific breed foods; Iams dog food from Large Breed Senior Plus to Premium Protection Chicken; and Iams cat food from adult chicken to hairball and weight control. The products come in various weights with different package sizes and expiration dates. You can see all of the product labels at the FDA site."

The company website notes that the specific pet food recalled affects roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1 percent) of the total annual production of their pet food products. It has reportedly been distributed among select retailers across the United States, during which a period of testing, researchers determined that some of the products may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Iams, Eukanaba dry pet foods
recalled over salmonella fears

Nearly 30 different types of cat and dog food are being recalled by  Procter & Gamble  because they could be contaminated with salmonella, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday < http://data.cnbc.com/quotes/PG > .

No human or pet has been reported sick, but the company is recalling the dry food because it might be contaminated, according to the FDA.

"Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products," the FDA said in a statement.

"Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian."

The recalled lots‹only a fraction of a percent of P&G's annual production‹include 11 types of Eukanaba dog food, 8 types of Iams dry dog food and 10 types of Iams cat food, all with best-by dates in November 2014.

Any pet food could be contaminated with bacteria that cause food poisoning, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends handling all pet food as if it could be.

"Washing your hands is the most important step to preventing illness," the CDC advises. "Wash your hands for 20 seconds with water and soap right after handling pet food and treats, and especially before preparing, serving or eating food, drinks or preparing baby bottles."

There have been several recalls of pet food and treats over the past year or so because of salmonella contamination, including one in July 2012 in which 49 people were sickened.

Posted by Mark Schieldrop (Editor) , August 16, 2013 at 10:06 AM

The Proctor & Gamble Company is voluntarily recalling lots of dry pet food because they may have been contaminated with Salmonella.

The food was distributed in the U.S. and represent about one-tenth of one percent of annual production, according to the FDA.

P&G¹s routine testing found that some products made during a 10-day window at one manufacturing plant may have been contaminated.

There have been no Salmonella-related illnesses reported.

The products affected include Eukanuba Dry Dog Foods, Iams Dry Dog Foods and Iams Dry Cat Foods.

According to the FDA:

³Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

³Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

³Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

³Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,² said the FDA.

Procter & Gamble Issue Recall on
Iams and Eukanuba Dry Pet Foods
Foodbeat

by Anna Fleet | August 15, 2013 @ 12:53 pm | 0

Procter & Gamble and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration have issued a joint recall of Iams and Eukanuba dry dog and cat foods due to suspected salmonella contamination.
The food was shipped to various retail stores across America with a ³Best By² date during the first two weeks of November 2014.

The FDA says the recall is just ³a precautionary measure,² and no salmonella-related illnesses have been reported so far in relation to the potentially contaminated products. The recalled food was manufactured over 10-days at a single site.

The fear is that not only pets will become infected with salmonella, but pet owners as well, who risk becoming sick after handling contaminated dog or cat food without washing their hands or sterilizing counter surfaces adequately. Pet owners can also contract salmonella through an infected pet.

Pets with salmonella poisoning will appear lethargic with runny, sometimes bloody stool, fever and vomiting. Humans will experience similar symptoms with associated nausea and abdominal cramping.

A full list of potentially contaminated pet food products and lot numbers can be found on the FDA¹s website <http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm365154.htm>. And consumers who purchased a potentially contaminated bag of food should contact P&G toll-free at (800) 208-0172 or online at www.iams.com or www.eukanuba.com and cease using the food immediately.
