Natura is issuing a massive pet food recall after the FDA found salmonella in one of their products. They are recalling pet food from all of their product lines, including food for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

While a single positive test for a contaminant usually leads to a limited recall, just covering a few days' worth of pet food production, Natura has chosen to recall everything produced more than a week ago, when they implemented additional product testing procedures.

"We are taking the additional precautionary measure," the employees announced in a press release, because "our first priority is the wellbeing of the pets we serve."

If your animal is showing symptoms of stomach distress, you should seek immediate treatment for your pet.

The recall includes all Innova, California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Mother Nature, and Karma branded dry pet food and biscuit treats with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014. The expiration date appears in different places on the various products. To find out where to look for your pet food's expiration date, see the illustrated guide on the Natura website.

If you own any of the recalled pet food, dispose of it immediately, but not before you clip key information off the bag. To get a full refund, you need to fill out this form and mail it to Natura with the UPC label, expiration date, and product code cut from the pet food bag.

Salmonella Contamination in Pet Food Prompts Voluntary Recall
EMSL Analytical provides testing for Salmonella and a wide variety of other foodborne pathogens.
WEBWIRE Thursday, June 20, 2013

According to Food Safety News, a voluntary recall has been issued by Natura Pet Foods due to possible Salmonella contamination. All dry pet foods sold under five of Natura¹s brands are included in this recall.

The voluntary recall was issued after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a test at the facility and discovered one positive result for Salmonella. As a precautionary measure, Natura has recalled all products manufactured in the facility where the infected product was produced.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in response to this recall.
Infected pet food puts both pets and humans at risk of acquiring Salmonella poisoning. While consumption of the product is an obvious risk for pets, handling the product may pose a less apparent risk for humans.

Pets infected with Salmonella may develop diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected pets can become carriers of the bacteria and infect other pets or humans. Rarely, Salmonella may spread from the intestines to other parts of the body and may be fatal if not treated properly with antibiotics, or could lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms, according to the FDA.

³Healthy individuals are usually able to recover from Salmonella without treatment, but children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems are susceptible to developing severe illness in which hospitalization is required,² states Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., EMSL¹s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. ³EMSL Analytical¹s experienced staff of trained microbiologists provides testing to detect Salmonella strains in food and environmental samples in our advanced microbiology laboratories across the United States and Canada.²
