This is Shadow, spayed female, 3yrs old, came in very scared and defensive. She was given up because the owners got divorced and the child would not clean the litter box. They got her as an 8 week old kitten, there were no other pets in the house, she got along with the 13yr old child and her owner said she was a sweet and happy cat.

Shadow started to settled in enough that we moved her to our adoptable cat room but did not make her available for adoption yet. We figured she would be stressed because of the other cats in the room. We have had 2 people working with her. She is loving to them, comes up, follows them around and rubs on them for attention. She lets the one volunteer pick her up as well. However, our staff has to interact with her to clean her cage and move her.

Shadow is not doing well when she thinks there is another cat nearby, she is worried and looking to see if one is around. She will hiss but sometimes will also swat. She has tried to nip as well in certain overstimulating situations like holding her to put her back in the cage and reaching in to clean her litterbox. She feels cornered in her cage and is very unsure. The shelter is too much for her.

Shadow has enjoyed being pet but she gets really scared when she hears or sees another cat. She will hiss and then she will swat if you are petting her.  She needs to be the only cat or have a much slower intro to a new cat where she cannot see them at first. If we are holding her when she hears another cat, she will swat first but if she is held too long, she is so scared she will nip at you to let her go. It could be that she is also not used to being held because it gives her no comfort.

If you are an Animal Rescue and can take this pet, be sure to reply to this email by Sunday night, 5/3/26, so I can make a note of it.
