We got a message from someone on the facebook page saying she found 2 puppies by the side of the road. She would normally drop them off at the shelter, but she contacted us in case we wanted to "pull" them early.

I know you said you wouldn't take pets from other people, but these are strays, so what is the correct response? They are dog- and people-friendly.

Legally, they are strays and are subject to the stray hold of 5 days if no collar/identification and 12 days if collared-if in Montgomery County, VA. Each justification will have their own stray laws.
That means they need to be at minimum declared to the local animal control, if not surrendered to them so that animal control can decide where the puppies go from there.

To echo what Trisha said,  these pups need to be reported as being found.  Ideally, the finder would hold on to them as this would decrease the pups' exposure to disease and keep a run open at the shelter.  If they are surrendered to Montgomery, Shannon will likely try to find them a foster - but that is no guarantee that one will be found.  The finder may want to post them to the MCFACC facebook page.

As for after that, I can see if my rescue contact back home could take them next weekend.  I am likely driving home so transport wouldn't be an issue (plus that is the undergrad Fall break and I am sure someone will be headed that way).  That will satisfy the 5 day stray hold.

P.S. If you could get pictures for me, that would be fabulous :)

Hi Laurel!  Tell your friend thank you for picking the puppies up off the side of the road and saving them from a potentially unfortunate situation!  If they were found in Montgomery County, she needs to notify animal control at the shelter and give a description and/or photo as well as her contact information (where the puppies are being kept).  Like Trisha said, there is a hold period and the length of time depends on whether they were found wearing collars or not.  She can "foster" them through the shelter so they don't have to go to the shelter and risk catching anything, but you have to give any potential owner time to claim them in case they are simply lost. I would also check Craigslist daily bc sometimes people post lost dogs on there when they are looking for them.  Once every effort has been made to find owners and they've been given the legal amount of time, then the puppies can be made available for rescue groups or adopters!  Let me know if you have any other questions or need anything.
