Vacancy Announcement for the Position

Public Health Educator PT

 

Location:             175 Green Street, Albany, NY 12202

 

Annual Salary:  $30,784 plus $240.00 for each complete year of service working for Albany County up to three full years ($720 total).

 

Civil Service Status: Competitive. Candidate will be subject to civil service examination.

 

Examples of Duties:

 

·        Assists in ongoing evaluation of community; development of community health assessment and Municipal Public Health Services Plan;

·        Works with health agencies, municipalities, community service councils and organizations to identify health needs and assist in planning to meet these needs;

·        Coordinates, plans, administers community based health education programs to influence public attitudes and behavior with regard to given health needs;

·        Designs, implements, teaches, and evaluates programs to improve health and wellness through increased awareness of health risk behavior and targeted risk reduction activities;

·        Conducts group and individual wellness promotion/disease prevention activities;

·        Plans and directs workshops, forums and discussion groups to promote public health and health education;

·        Distributes educational and informational materials and conducts training and presentations to schools, community service professionals, and agencies in the community and within the department;

·        Writes and submits grant requests for new and existing health education programs and completes the budget for the grants;

·        Completes mandated paperwork necessary to receive State funding for health programs;

·        Represents the health department on committees of local and community service councils;

·        Develops community support for utilization of health department services such as dental, immunization, STD’s, maternal and environmental services;

·        Assists department staff in understanding the needs and concerns of special needs and vulnerable populations and develops ways to communicate with these special needs and vulnerable populations regarding health services and issues;

 

Qualifications:

 

A.     Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in health education, health science, public health, health promotion, community health, or health communications; or,

B.     Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in education, nursing, epidemiology, wellness and fitness, or nutrition and one (1) year of experience in health education; or,

C.     Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, human services, social work or psychology and two (2) years of experience in health education.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:   A local public health educator must satisfactorily complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in health education related topics approved by the New York State Health Department within one (1) year of appointment.
