Subject: Mental Health and Know your Rights - Sunday, 4/27
Dear Melanie -Once again, I am gathering Spanish-speaking mental health practitioners to support mental health for the immigrant population. We are looking for folks to be involved in a longer term way to deal with potential fallout from local deportations but specifically right now I’m looking for facilitators for an upcoming event. Might you know folks who would be interested?Basic Information for potential volunteersThis is an invitation to an upcoming Know Your Rights training in Spanish for the immigrant community. The invite includes an introduction to the mental health component that I am coordinating for this training. We will be providing information and resources about working with fear and stress as well as a small group opportunity to share about what participants are dealing with. Elvia Garcia, organizer for the NYIC, estimated that 70 people will be attending the training. I am looking for 5 mental health practitioners to join me in facilitating a small group for participant to share about their experience. I will have resources and suggested questions/themes.The training runs from 3 to 8PM - but small group facilitators could arrive between 4 and 4:30PM and stay until 6 (at a minimum). You are welcome to attend the entire event.I can’t believe we’re at this point in history – but here we are. Thanks so much -KarenHi everyone,I would like to extend an invitation to you, or anyone in your network, to attend " Deja que ICE se derrita" a community event I / NYIC will be leading on April 27th from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
As part of my work doing Know Your Rights (KYR) workshops, I’ve had the privilege of facilitating many KYR sessions with community groups and community organizations. However, I understand that not everyone in our community has had the opportunity to attend a KYR session or connect with local community groups. This event is specifically designed to reach those who may not have had these opportunities yet.
Here’s what we’ve got planned:
KYR Workshop: Learn what to do if you come into contact with ICE or law enforcement. This is about empowering our community with the knowledge we need.
Empowerment Sessions: We understand that while KYR sessions are empowering, they also require communities to carry the weight of new information and confront systemic barriers that can feel overwhelming. After the workshop, we’ll have licensed counselors like Karen Beetle, LMSW, helping everyone learn new exercises to manage stress and stay strong in tough times.
Free Dinner & Ice Cream: We’ve got a yummy dinner planned, plus ice cream to cool off!
Giveaways: We’ll have free items to hand out like hats, soap, diapers, and more.
Empower Zumba: To finish the day off, Emely Sandoval will lead a fun Zumba session for all ages. You won’t want to miss it!
A few things to keep in mind:
The event will be in Spanish only.
You must register to attend—space is limited. Register here
Please don’t post about the event on social media, and share responsibly
If you know anyone who could use this, please pass it along! Feel free to email me around any questions.
Con mucho amor y fuerza,
Elvia
