Meand one-man atmospheric black metal band Lustre meet again. Nachtzeit, the man behind Lustre, has been very productive, releasing a full-length album and an EP just about every year since 2008. I guess once you create alone, unencumbered by a full band, only your own zeal, creativity and passion is the limit. Yet, I can't say that I have been mesmerized by what I have heard from Lustre and it is being mesmerized what this music truly requires to give it the highest grade.

A Spark of Times of Old is another one of those EPs, which came in the same year with a full-length Wonder, and is basically a single 20 min long track. The earlier comparisons to more known Burzum and Xasthur or less known Fear of Eternity are still valid on A Spark of Times of Old, yet this record by Lustre has certain ancient prehistoric feeling on it, more epicness, so to speak. Title befitting, the fans of older Summoning could really hear similarities in this steady quiet drum machine rhythms and endless layered keyboards.

Those key melodic hooks introduced periodically throughout the song are interesting and nice, but, in terms of songwriting it very soon becomes rather obvious how the music is going to unfold. Introduce a rhythm, play a melodic hook on top of it, repeat it for a few minutes, layer another one on top, repeat what is now a combination for a few more minutes, scrap and introduce the whole sequence anew. No acceleration, no complications. Just check this out: 3:40 into the song the first hook is in, then at 6:40 another one goes over the top, and then the most complexity is reached when another layer is added at around 7:50. By 9:15 everything is abandoned in favor of a new melodic replacement. 13:30 sees a new one twist layered over the fuzzy background after a temporary clearing. 15:15 is time for a final twist with 16:30 culminating in what I can call a "solo". Add short periodic snake-like hisses substituting for vocals, short bursts, not really sustained, at 2:20, 5:40, 10:40 and 17:50, and the picture is complete.

Perhaps I am overly analytical describing A Spark of Times of Old, but this is how this music seems to me - formulaic. Not sure what profession Nachtzeit is outside of Lustre, but his music composing is so calculated here that I am thinking he could be in computers or mathematics. So while the flow, spirit and melody are real pleasant, the rigid nature of the music makes the overall material very expected, leaving little overall surprise. The best description I honestly give to A Spark of Times of Old is that of a PowerPoint presentation accompanied by a series of changing backgrounds and melodic moments in relationship to that background. As soon as the picture changes the melody changes too, albeit subtly, so the next time the slide is flipped you know what is coming music-wise.

Spark has been on my radar since their demo, which landed them on my 12 Hardcore Bands to Check Out in 2018 list. The German outfit plays a potent blend of straight hardcore inspired byt the straight edge revival of the late '90s and early '00s and the melodic strain of the style that came out of the DC in the late '80s.

Their 2019 split EP with Belgium's Chain Reaction was a banger, and though it's taken a few years longer than I had hoped, Spark is finally gearing up for the release of their debut album, Supernova. As someone who's lived with the advance of the record for a few weeks now, I can tell you that the wait was worth it.

To help spread the word about the forthcoming album, I spoke with Spark vocalist Andy Villhauer about their backstory, the lyrical side of Supernova, and his thoughts on European hardcore bands getting a fair shot in America.

We then wrote and roughly recorded the first couple of songs to send them out to friends, who could potentially join the band. The first full lineup got together in 2017 to write and record the demo, which eventually dropped a couple days before NYE 2017, so it would be out for our first show on January 1, 2018.

[Laughs] On the LP we definitely put more than two riffs in our songs, even though there are some short bangers on there too for sure. For Supernova, we included way more influences than we did for our early material.

I love how diverse the label roster is, but at the same time it all makes sense. Since our LP is a bit more melodic than our old stuff, it fits the hardcore bands on the label, but also the more melodic / emo bands.

In my experience, there is no particular science to finding a good drone, but it will depend on the type of track you are writing. For something more expressive and complex, synths such as Omnisphere and Absynth have thousands of drones and soundscapes that can inspire, but for this exercise, we are going to keep things simple. Open Surge, navigate to Pads and then load up Pad 2 MW.

This really is a chance for you to experiment with different sounds and melodies until you stumble across something you like. If this feels like unfamiliar terrain, just follow along with the pattern used here, and feel free to copy our parts. We now have a drone with a melody that is sounding interesting.

For us, the next stage in our process is the most fun! We have a melody and some kind of key signature that we are working in. The bassline can change everything, particularly for this style of music. For film scoring, a repeating melodic idea with a bassline that changes and evolves can really develop a scene. This is because the harmonies we are creating each have a sound or emotion that they evoke.

You could loop these bass notes like a riff or carry on for eternity, never fully resolving. The most important thing is that, by this point, you should have a musical idea that could be worth developing into a full song or track. It may be fine as it is too, in which case you can start using some reverbs, distortions and modulation effects to make things sound even deeper.

The piece of music we have made today has taken minutes to program and is already yielding some satisfying results. Bear in mind that the results may not always be pleasing, but the point is to get you from nothing to something quickly, and to avoid hours of preset-hopping in search of inspiration. You really can grab the bull by the horns and start being creative as soon as you open your DAW.
