Angularjs ui bootstrap. datepicker using the controller as not $scope

I am trying to implement the datepicker from the angularjs ui bootstrap.  However the examples all use the scope injection.

Im specitifically trying to implement it using controller as.  This is because the rest of my project I have used controller as rather than injecting $scope alll the time.

This is my attempt on fiddle.  I think its close
