Include text saved from textarea but don't escape <br> tags

I have a simple textarea that I am saving off to the database. When a user has a hard line feed in the text area I save that in the database as <br/>. 

Then when I read the JSON back to display the data the <br/> tags are visible in the text rather than being interpreted as breaks. Is there a better way to save multiple lines with hard line feeds and have them display with bindings?
