Angular Material Datepicker transforming Date value

I am noticing an issue with the Angular Material Date picker component where when user types in a two digit date number 10, it gets formatter to 10/1/2001

This can be reproduced on the documentation site here
https://v16.material.angular.io/components/datepicker/overview
Just type in a two digit number like 10 then click elsewhere then notice how the date gets transformed.

 Please can some explain why this is happening and how to fix it if it is indeed a bug?
