'Read and change all your data on the websites you visit' - why?

I really like the look of Search Center, but the permission it seeks before installing - 'Read and change all your data on the websites you visit' - is disturbing. Why is it necessary? Thank you.

Yeah it sounds a bit dodgy...

Back in the day it was the only way you could get things like keyboard shortcuts and text selection to work.

However chrome extensions are way better now, so this permission is almost definitely not needed.

There isn't anything dodgy in the code, but I haven't updated it in years!
