God’s Judgment is Justified but His Gospel Trumps All

In the first lesson we established the universal reality that human
beings have a fallen (sinful) nature. It’s not things we do so much as
a condition we have that is just naturally self centered and wayward
at our core.

In the second lesson we saw how God in his goodness gave mankind laws
that served two main purposes; One, to govern this wild nature in some
orderly fashion, and 2) to make humans realize they were incapable of
keeping the law sufficiently and needed a Savior.

As a result of our inability to keep God’s laws and commands, like in
any system of justice, we justifiably deserved God’s punishment since
our sin was against him. Everyone on the planet who is the least bit
in touch with their thoughts and behavior knows that God is right in
his judgment.

But, while we were still sinning, God did the most amazing thing.
Rather than apply the just penalty on us, he allowed Jesus to step
into our place and take the required punishment and set us free
completely. This act of God’s grace, freely bestowed toward all
mankind, is called the Gospel. It is the announcement of the Christian
Church to the world, “Come to Jesus all you who are weary and burdened
down with sin and guilt, and He will give you rest.”
