Subject: ACD-PREMED-BSECT (B Section Pre-Med Students): Incredible Clinical Volunteering Opportunity at Hurley Medical Center
To:

Hey everyone,

Allison Seeley and I have been working with people at Hurley Medical Center to establish a new and exciting volunteering opportunity. The program is called HELP which stands for Hospital Elder Life Program. The goals of HELP are to work together with patients that are 65 and older that are hospitalized to maintain physical and cognitive functioning for the duration of their hospitalizations. HELP initiatives include a daily visitor program, therapeutic activities program, early mobilization program, non-pharmacologic sleep protocol, hearing and vision protocol, and oral volume repletion and feeding assistance program. This is a national program that has been shown to reduce delirium in elderly patients. This program is all volunteer-based, which is where we come in.

Hurley has asked our pre-med program to partner with them to support the HELP program. It is a phenomenal opportunity for you to get long-term clinical volunteering hours. I would like all of you to strongly consider participating. In order to be part of the program, you must commit to working a 4 hour shift per week for 6 months (I believe the timing is flexible, but they will definitely need people right after the launch in April) and attend the HELP training program which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 14th. I will send more details on the time of the training session once I receive it, but I think it is 4-6 hours of training. Details of your responsibilities, etc. will be discussed at the training session. NOTE: I encourage all of you to get this training, even if you aren't going to volunteer right away.

We will be having Hurley representatives give a presentation at our B-section premed club meeting on Thursday, April 12th during noon hour. Please plan to attend. For those who are interested and cannot make it, I will send updated information to you as I get it.

In order to volunteer at Hurley, there is also a short Hurley volunteering training program. You must do this before you can volunteer for HELP. I have included the forwarded information on how to do this below.

The process for your students to volunteer for HELP is as follows:

1.       Sign up/Register to become a Hurley Medical Center Volunteer by filling out the application below.

https://www.hurleyfoundation.org/volunteer/volunteer-application/

2.        Once the application is accepted, your students must attend a Hurley Volunteer Orientation (held 2x a month on Wednesday afternoons)

(Here are the upcoming Hurley Volunteer Orientation dates)

-          Wednesday, March 14th 3:00-5:00pm

-          Wednesday, April 11th 3:00 – 5:00pm

3.          Once the mandatory Hurley Volunteer orientation is completed, sign up for a HELP volunteer training which is to take place the 2nd weekend in April.

Please sign up and attend either the March 14th or April 11th volunteer orientation session. These are the only two volunteer orientation dates before the launch of the HELP program.

Lastly, please let me know if you plan to participate in this amazing program.

Thanks,

Dr. Seeley
