Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Workshops

From June to August 2008, The Hayward showcases the Hyperbolic Crochet Reef Project, instigated by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring in Los Angeles. The reef is a large-scale, constantly mutating series of hand-made yarn or plastic crochets that replicate the forms of natural coral. Just as all living creatures result from variations in DNA, so the species in these handicrafted reefs arise from a simple algorithm. Developing organically, it is made by an ever-expanding group of participants from around the world.
An exciting new contribution to the reef will be created in London and unveiled at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall to coincide with the exhibition. In the build up to this, LA-based science writer Margaret Wertheim is in London in March to lead two workshops to introduce the project to potential UK contributors and share hyperbolic crochet techniques.
These workshops are for people of any level of experience who are interested in crochet, passionate about environmental issues or simply intrigued by the project. We need volunteers to help the spread the Hyperbolic Crochet bug and make UK reef grow by sharing and teaching the techniques to colleagues, networks and friends.
