Hi Knitters!
CODEPINK: Women for Peace in the United States is creating a
beautiful, knitted cozy to cover the fence in front of the White House
in Washington DC this Mother's Day. The message will read “We will not
raise our children to kill another mother’s child” --inspired by Julia
Ward Howe’s original Mother’s Day Proclamation. We’ll be piecing it
together from individual squares knitted by women across the globe as
part of the 24 hour Mother’s Day vigil for Women who live in War
Zones. We would like to invite you and your group to contribute to
our Cozy for Peace!

Julia Ward Howe, best known for writing the Battle Hymn of the
Republic and her stance against slavery, was horrified by the carnage
and suffering during the American Civil War and the economic
devastation that followed. She used her poetic gift to pen a
proclamation against war, a proclamation that birthed Mothers Day in
the United States. So it wasn’t just a Hallmark creation!
Julia's solution? Women should gather together to "promote the
alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of
international questions, the great and general interests of peace.”
What more powerful way to celebrate Julia Ward Howe's proclamation
than uniting women across the globe through a collective project for
peace. We are asking knitters to host knitting circles, or
individually contribute 4" x 4" squares to our project. For details,

Let's make this Mother's Day a special one. Join an international
community of women as we co-create a positive, powerful, compassionate
(and pink!) message of peace.
Sincerely,
Paris

"Arise then...women of this day! Arise, all women who have
hearts!..We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of
another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs." ~
