Thefirst step on your journey to greatness, Character Creation plays a huge part in your journey. Picking the right class and character will go a long way to ensuring you enjoy your Elder Scrolls Online experience. A true hero must not only be able to bear arms against their enemies, but to also look like someone out of legends.
The first two choices are your character's gender (male or female) and the sound of their voice. There are eight voice options for the varrying gender and race combinations, so be sure to find the one that sounds right to you.
While selecting a race, it's also important to consider the faction you wish to align yourself with. There are three currently in the game. Certain races will start out tied to specific factions, unless you have pruchased the Imperial Edition of Elder Scrolls Online, and the option to change won't come for quite some time. If you and a group of friends want to play together from the very beginning of the game, everyone should talk over which faction they want before hand.
As with any Elder Scrolls game, the first step is picking from the many Races available to you. If you are playing the standard version, there will be 9 available. Adventurers who purchased the Imperial Edition will be able to play a 10th race, the Imperial. A brief outline is below, but more detailed info on each race can be found here.
After figuring out the race you want, you can now choose a class. For some people, it might work best to think about which class they want prior to choosing a race. You can jump around the creation process at will, so if you're unsure of the race you want, pick the class first then it will help narrow down the best racial choice. A brief outline of each class is below, but for all the details head to their dedicated pages Here.
Elder Scrolls has never lacked customization, and ESO is no different. In fact, it's even more so than before. Players can sculpt the look of their character through many separate options. The first is body type, which gives you a sliders for the balance of musculature, largeness, and thiness.
The head gets the same treatment for detail as the body, allowing you to slide your facial structure between Heroic, Soft, and Angular features. Along with it, and in the next tab, comes things like age, adornment (facial hair and small trinkets), hair style, colour, forehead slope, and more.
A few days ago, TheRoyalFamily made a post on Dating Sims on the Holodeck about playing dress-up in video games. As someone who has been known to occasionally spend more time on character creation than playing the actual game, and whose World of Warcraft transmog budget is vast, this was a topic of interest to me.
What inspired me to make this post in response was the lamentation about the lack of variety (especially in the cute and sexy female outfits) in Elder Scrolls Online. Please forgive the incoming photo dump.
The outfitting station in ESO is fairly robust, but not without its restrictions. First, you must have a character that knows the motif (style) in order to transmog to a certain style. Dye colors are mostly achievement rewards. Costumes are also available, however, changing their color either requires and ESO+ membership or a dye stamp, bought with premium currency, and dye stamps can only be applied once.
I personally love the fact that I can design up a look for each of my alts to avoid having mismatched armor while I replace things every few levels, but there are a lot of folks out there far more into Fashion Scrolls Online than I am.
Elder Scrolls Online has plenty to offer video game fashionistas, in my opinion. Even with many of the cosmetics locked behind a paywall, ESO+ members get a monthly allotment of Crowns which could be used to pick out some fantastic costumes (or other character customization options) without shelling out additional money to do so.
Hair Styles are cosmetic collectibles. Some hairstyles can be worn by all races, others are restricted to specific races. The horns and feathers on Argonian hairstyles tend to be taller on male Argonians than on female Argonians.

There is a lot to react to in the overall experience, but it all begins with your character creation. There's some good, bad and a lot of ugly. I've used those labels to share my take on the process. Here is a look at the creation of my character Volkas Red Dog. He is like a mixture of Bill Duke, Paterson Joseph and Malcolm Barrett from Timeless. I like that show.
Hairstyles on the head and face are also customizable, and the presentation of the process is solid. You're essentially an outlaw, and the creation process is a booking where you give all of your details. It's similar to the presentation NBA 2K19 used for its Prelude; only there is an old western criminal element.
Once your character is complete, they are rendered and placed within the open world beautifully. It doesn't take long before you become attached and your outlaw gains his own identity. That personalization is important.
The options are a bit limited in most areas, at least for now. There are no face sculpting opportunities, and while there is a tape measure on the screen, I didn't notice any place where you could adjust height. You can pick your character's build, but it's very template-based, which means there won't be a lot of variations in physical appearance throughout the Red Dead Online world.
It seems you're only allowed to have one character active at this time. I'm not sure if that will change, but I hope it does. I had hopes of creating a male and female outlaw, but there wasn't an option for a second character.
This is just the first day of the Beta and Rockstar has promised constant updates. I'm just hoping the character creation suite gets a few more updates. While I understand that it will be carrying a heavy load once everyone has access, I still believe it could offer more layers.
Are there any outlaws with good teeth? Every option I saw had mangled and/or discolored fronts. The mole game was especially pronounced as well. Because I chose a bald character, his entire head was overrun with cartoonish blemishes. I must admit, while these characteristics won't win my character any beauty pageants, I liked the rawness, and it seems completely intentional on Rockstar's part.
