Flood eases in Terengganu, more evacuated in Kelantan (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: More people have been evacuated to flood relief centres in Kelantan following the water level at Sungai Golok still remaining above the danger mark. A state flood operations room spokesman said 2,558 people were being sheltered at relief centres as of this morning. Last night the number stood at 2,031 people.

Pasir Mas still has the highest victims at 2,190 people followed by Machang (190), Tanah Merah (75), Tumpat (54) and Kuala Krai (49), the spokesman said. The water level at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang at 9am today was 10.29m (danger mark 9m). It was a slight drop compared to the 10.42m level on Saturday.

Overflowing of the river also caused a drop in economic activities in Rantau Panjang, a town with a popular tax-free shopping zone. However, Sungai Kelantan did not pose any flood risk Sunday with the levels at all the main measuring points below the danger mark. No major roads were reported closed except for the one leading to the popular beach resort of Pantai Cahaya Bulan near Kota Baru which is off limits to light vehicles at Kampung Tikat. The weather in Kelantan on Sunday morning is sunny.

In PERLIS, after subsiding on Saturday, floods again hit Alor Biak near here forcing 54 people to seek relief at evacuation centres. State Welfare, Women’s Development and Special Functions Committee chairman Mansor Jusoh said they were moved to the centres from 8pm on Saturday.

Meanhwile, the situation in TERENGGANU has improved a lot with only 57 people being sheltered at flood relief centres on Sunday as compared to 534 people on Saturday. A spokesman from the state flood operations room said only four relief centres still remained in operation, one each in Besut, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu and Setiu. He said Jalan Tok Kah Lintang in Dungun remained closed to all vehicles as it was still under 0.5m water.

It was the same for Jalan Matang Nibong in Kampung Telemong and Jalan Bukit Perah Kampung Jah in Hulu Terengganu as they were under 1m water. The water levels of the main rivers in the state were also reported to be dropping. Clear weather was reported in Terengganu on Sunday morning.

In KEDAH, 59 more people were moved to relief centres in Padang Terap overnight after several more villages in the district became inundated, bringing the total number of flood victims to be evacuated to 638. Padang Terap district officer Mat Noh Ahmad said they were being sheltered at 10 flood relief centres with the bulk of them, 265 people from 60 families, at SK Seri Bakti. Meanwhile, the water level at Sungai Kuala Nerang at 11am was reported to be 18.02m(danger mark 17.7m).—adopted from Bernama

Aware of this situation, MPPUTP is running a survey on students who might be affected due to flooding especially those are living in East Coast of the Peninsular (Kelantan, Terengganu and North states). We are looking forward for future actions in case it may involve groups of students who face difficulties to return home during semester break.

We will be proposing several actions which are :

1) Extending the period for accommodation to the affected students to stay back during semester break

2) Providing more spaces for storing the belongings to ease students movement

3) Running the aid donation to help the victims
